Tha spot cotton market dropped 4 cant
yesterday, at which the tone was quiet
gr.l ateady. The demand waa brisk from
tha openlnff. both for spots and f o b. cot
ton. and as a result the day closed with
a Urge business to Its credit. Exporter*
se<mad to want cotton, and when this Is
the case, they are gom-rally willing to
meet holder's prices. The day's receipts
were 10.22$ bales.
The spirits turpentine market opened
linn at 364 cents, and closed llrm at a
decitns of 14 cent. After the dosing It
was currently reported that the situation
was easier, and that It was possible fur
ther concession* may be made on the part
of ractors. Kosins closed firm and un
changed, with a good business doing Ow
ing to the celebration of the Jewish holi
day, and the consequent closing of many
of the large Jobbing Ironses, business In
the wholesale -lines was restricted. The

to a level quite substantially over that of
Saturday at the close. Weakness persist
ed In some individual stock*, and the an

ternoon put a stop to the advancing ten
dency of price* o that the closing was
heavy *nd dull with only a few net gain*
remaining.
The special point* of weaknea* were
Teope* Lias and Brooklyn Transit, the
former dropping below *3 before Ihe close,
and the latter touching 41. both being Ihe
low price* on ihe present movement This
late weakness had a ymith#llc effect
el* where among the specialties. Tobac
co. Sugar ar.d Ihe New York public utili
ties being notably affected. The steel
stocks were prominent In the early
strength of the market on account of a
