The sharp competition for business be tween the two telephone companies ap j.ccre to tie accompanied with some 111 feeling, judging from the circumstance* which attended the r. ntovu) of the Itell phone and the suloiMutlon of a Georgia phone at the Poatofllc. yesterday. lYistmustcr Imvl* called upon the Iso - ampoules recently to submit bids for furnishing the Postoffice with telephone service, dating from Oct. 1. Both compa nlt* submitted bids and that of the Geor gia t'ompan.v being much the lower the manager of the company was notified of It* acet plane*, and the Beil Company woe notified to dleconilnue tie service and Im mediately proceeded o remove Its ap par.tlu- The Postolbee floor of the government building is equipped with a telephone con dull. running from the York and Whita ker street corner of the building, under the floor to Hie ofilces of the Postmaster and his assistant. The conduit pursues a comewhat circuitous route, coming out at n |>ont on the wall where It t* neatly hid den by a mahogany panel. When the Bell Company's man arrived at the office he proceeded t remove the panel covering the mouth of the conduit Postmaster Doyle was notified at once by some of the employe* of the office. On bring asked hy the rote master what he was trying to do the man replied that he Intended o remove the wire from the conduit Be was Informed that the wire wus the property of tile Po#tofft-e. The workman Imlsted that the wire was the properly of the B*dl Company, and an nounced a very positive Intention of re moving ts The postmaster was even more positive tn h * determination that the wire should not be moved He dis tinctly remembered that there was a wire In the conduit before the telephone wa* put tn. a* otherwise tt would have been Impossible to loy the telephone wire, and he did not propose to have the conduit rendered useless by the removal of the only wlte hy which connection could be mode through the conduit Ho accordingly ordered the telephone man to discontinue the work of removal as the contract with •he company had not yet expired. Early yesterday morttlne the respresen latlve of the Bell Company put In hi* ap pearance and proceeded to remove his company's apparatus. Including as much of the wire ns he could get hold of. Ac cording lo the I’ostctfice employes he was ui title to pull the wire out and so cut it off and Biuff.d It as far up the conduit as possible This was the condition In which the Georgia Company's employes found It later In the day. hut they aurceerted In fishing the wire out and making connec tion without nny difficulty It la said that the reason the Bell Company's man failed In his effort to pull the wire out Is that a Georgia man had tied It at the oth er end of the conduit outside the building TO CB RE A ITli.ll It OAK BAY.
