Although Savannah has been a town full
of military spirit almost from Its foun
dation, no permanent provision was made
for u military* parad# or drill ground un
ti. on- hundred and ten y .irs nft-r the
landir.g of Oglethorpe. This was proba

commons bounded the city, convenient of

selves of them. At no Umc probably In
ks history, except in the brief period aft
er the Civil War when ho Union army
was in control, ha® the city been without
on® or morn military organisations, and
during many years United States force
was stationed here during the winter
month-', and later on throughout the year
After the War of 1811* a small force of
regulars was stationed temporarily t

urged the Secretary of War to station
more troops at or near th© city and
agreed to furnish land for barracks.
Nothing seems to have been done on this
line and in the spring of 1824 all of the
United States troops were withdrawn, on
account of the In k of accommodation#
Council, on April 15, adopted resolutions
appointing a committee to corre.-pond
with the Secretary of War. with a view
of having at least two companies regu
larly stationed here. The secretary
agreed to move the troops back If suita
ble nnd healthy barracks were selected
A committee for this purpose wa* ap

ever made.
