The spot cotton markets shared ths Mi-
tivlty of the futures market, which

tul day. There did not seem to be any

a result prices sagged at times, clos

lower. Savannah spois closed quiet at a
decline of l-l*c on ail grides. The de
mand for cotton, both on the table and
in the interior was light, and a limited
y..turns of trading was reported all ‘lay.
Many of ths trade express the belief that
there will not be any aide price changes
between now and the holiday's, and they
■to not therefore look for any ronsidcra
b.e volume of trading In the meantime.
It was another remarkably active day
cn the New York Stock Excnsnge. Spec
ulation progressed at a lively rate, the
riles to noon amounting to nearly 100.000
shares. Money ruled steady at < per cent.,
then 1 per cent., and the lasi loan was
mad* at 4* per cent. About midday It

checked, and many of the stocks affected

ingly broad and varied trading. A quick
market was offered for almost any vol
ume of nooks and very - notable strength
continued at various point* In lit* Hat. but
the burden of the proflt-laklng sales
provd rather heavier than for some time
past and made more general Inroads u|>on
prices.
The market fairly turned reactionary
throughout at one time, tinder Iho In
fluence of some rather violent, break* tn
special stark*. Tin Plate was the most
effective of these, when It suddenly slump
cl 384 after a show of early strength. A
drop of 14 point* In New York Air-Brake
win Impressive In It* way, hut had little
effect on the niarket. The reactionary'
tendency- of the Junior VantlerblUs de
veloped Giat speculator* had been taking
rather too sanguine a view of possible re
adjustments of securities of there <om

An effort was made to reclaim the bull
position in the final hour by sudden ad

Central. General Electric, th* Chicago
Terminal Transfer stocks and the Wis
consin Central stock*. The advance# In
these above the low potnt ran from 3to
64 points. Ibices did stiffen In sympathy,
but the speculative enthusiasm was not
fully renewed and the market closed very
feverish and unsettled with a point or
more lost of some of these sudden gains.
Even the Erie stock*, which have been
the real bnekbone for some days ram* to a
pause to-day and Ihe flrsl preferred, after

There have been such reactions from lop
prices many time* before In llte present
movement of stock* and ihe real tnck In
to-dsy’S market seemed to be that ihe

rushed upwards as sustaining force In

been exploiter! In the course of the present

Professional operators are constantly on
the lookout to take th# bear side of the
market with the culmination of th* rise,
and they sold freely on the short side to
day, a* they have done for several day#
past, but they also covered largely before
me close. The general bullish enthusiasm
up to thla time has proved too much for
