An Old Maine Woodsman Discovers
Work for Hts Tin* Woodpecker*.

Patten. Me—After having *pent more
than slaty ysar* and mors than fIUDO In
hunting bear* and studying the way* of
wild creatures, Oreenleaf Dnvls has be

purpose of using them to convert ordi
nary rock maple* Into the rare and cost
ly wood known as btrdreye maple. Mr.
liavis is more than *O. Sixty years ago
he Inherited a mill property valued at
110,000, which he soon sold and then he
went to the woods under the side of
Mount Kalhahdin. Here he built a log
camp and spent much of tils time on the
trail of bear* and Indian devlla. of which
he has killed more than any other man'

It has been Mr. Davis' belief ihul no
creature should be kept In captivity more
than a month. If the creature# he
caught chose to remain with him after
i has period they were welcome to such
fare a* he could afford to give. If they
wanted to go. tha doors were open. In
this wsy he has tamed squirrels, musk
rat* and woodchuck* until they and their
offspring nearly overran Ids camp With
bird* he has been lea* successful, because
most of them went away South at the

ungrateful enough to prefer tbelr liberty
to anything that Mr. Davis could offer.
He has two crow*, one of which Is more
man • year* old. which have stayed by
him and never sought the aoclety of their
kind. Two robin* lived with him for
three year*, hut perished one cold night
when the comp Are went out. His great
success ha* been won with woodpecker*,
of which h* now ha* nearly ltt They
are of the hairy and the downy ape l* In
about equal number*, but more than both
of these In number and esteem are the
red-headed sapsucker*. which pick round
hole* In the bark of trees, making them
look like the bottom of an old-styled co
