Atlanta. Dec. 31.—Seventy-six Georgia
colonels will present Gov. Candler with
a loving cup. The movement to this end
was quietly started several days ago by
Cols. Lowry and Silverman, and the cup,
a handsome three-handled affair, is now
111 the hands of the engraver, Charles
Crankshaw. As soon as the inscriptions
have been cut upon it, the Governor’s
staff, attired in full regimentals, will wait
upon the executive, and deliver It to him
as a token of their esteem. The mimes ot
the donors, the members of the Gov
ernor’s staff, will be engraved upon the
goblet, also Byron’s signflcant line “In
the goblet alone no deception is found.”
The presentation will take place to-mor
tow or the next day.
Gen W. W. Gordon of Savannah, has
been tendered the position as one of the
trustees of the Soldiers’ Home, to suc
ceed Col. Estiu. resigned. A meeting of
the board will be held In Atlanta, on Jan.
10, to make necessary ar’angements for
the opening of the Home.
Dr. B. W. Bizzell, county physician,
resigned this morning, rather than' re
sign his position on the Board of Health.
He was forced to do one or the other by
a bill lately passed by the Legislature,
against the holding of two public officoe
at the same time.
Hon. Hoke Smith has received an in
vitation from the Chicago Rent Estate
Board to deliver an address before that
body at their annual bdtaque*. which will
be held in the Auditorium at Chicago on
4he 10th of January, which he has ac
cepted.
The police department has not been
behind the rest of the city in progress.
It will complete to-day the biggest year’s
work in is history, over 14,000 city cases
and 1.600 state cases.
The second term of the Georgia School
of Technology opened this morning. The
school has a larger enrollment than ever
before, something like 425 pupils. About
thirty new pupils were enrolled this
morning. In all probability the enroll
ment will reach 500 by the end of the
spring term.
News was received here to-day that Mr.
and Mrs. Thomas F. Felder, formerly of
this city, but who now reside in New
York, have Inherited $3,000,000 from the es
tate of Samuel M. Murphy, the wealthiest
man in Tennessee.

Brunswick, G., Dec. 31. —J. R. Davis, a
well known and highly respected white
man, shot his wife by mistake last night
and killed her. Davis has been troubled
with burglars, and kept his gun loaded
the last few days, waiting to catch one
ot them. Last night his wife walked out
In the yard, and without giving him warn
ing started back Into the house. Davis
caw her through the window, and poking
the double-barreled shotgun through, fired
and discharged a load of nine buckshot In
her back. She screamed and he then dis
covered that it was his wife
A physician waa summoned, but he
could do nothing for her, and she died
thin morning, after fully exonerating her
husband frpm all blame.

night after spending the holidays with his
home folks, ar>d Is being warmly congrat
ulated by his friends on his approaching
ma-riage to a charming young lady of
Alaoama. *

the Year 211,700 Hales.
Amerlcus, Ga., Dec. 31.—The warehouse
and supply firm of Johnson & Harrold,
for forty years a landmark in Amerlcus,
and one of the wealthiest houses in Geor
gia, to-day dissolved by mutual consent,
and will be changed to a corporation, to
be known as the Johnson & Harrold Ware
house Company. The new concern will
have a large capital stock, and will do
an Immense business as heretofore.
The management of the Windsor Ho
tel changes to-morrow, when Henry S.
McCleskv succeeds there-to, having leased
splendid hostelry for a year.
Mr. McClesky comes from Blakely,
though- formerly a resident of Amerlcus,
and connected with the Windsor.
The w-arehouses of Amerlcus have re
ceived up to to-night 26,700 bales cotton,
which Is believed to be short of last
season’s receipts this date. Receipts a
the compress direct are not obtainable,
but the total for Americus will probably
reach 60,000 bales to date.

Waite of His Company's President.
Atlanta, Dec. SI.—A private dispatch re
ceived In Atlanta to-day from New York
city contained the information that Ed
ward G. Coffman, the alleged absconding
secretary and treasurer of the Southern
Agricultural Company and manager of
the Atlanl.i Handle Works, committed
suicide in New York last night. These
companies were financed largely by Mil
waukee men, and the president of the
company, 8. Landauer. killed himself in
Atlanta about six months ago.

against Capt. Ed Aldrod, Lieut. G. S. I.
Watt, and Sergt. Huff. The following
