SCREVEN A TOP NOTCMER.
FEW IF AW COOTIES IS GEORGIA
AHEAD OF IT.
Col. J. H. Eatill’a Visit to Sylvants
and His Impressions of the Tons
and Its People—A Hustling Busi
ness Center of One of the Best
Agricultural Sections of Georgia.
Some of the People Who Jlute
Screven County Prosperous.
“There are few better counties In
Georgia than Screven, If there are any
better,” said Col. J. H. Estill on his re
turn from Sylvania, the other day. "I
arrived at Sylvania on a very disagree
able day; It was cold and rainy, but
the hearty welcome I received at all
hands made me forget the weather. I
met a great many old friends, and
made, I hope, many new ones. The
gcreven Superior Court was in session,
and every district from the Savannah
river to the Ogeechee was represented
by termers, merchants and professional
gnen.”
“Sylvania, like every other town
In South Georgia, has a prosperous
appearance. It has a handsome brick
Court House, and a street full of sub
gtantial-looking business blocks.
Among the latter is that of the L- H.
Hilton Company, and it is no reflection
pit other substantial edifices to say that
It is the handsomest building in the
town. The Sylvanians point to it with
pride and also to the elegant mansion
Just being completed by Mr. Hilton.
He is the sitting member of the Legis
lature for Screven, and was a good
enough citizen to come down from At
lanta to be foreman of the grand Jury.
1 mention Mr. Hilton because every
body in Sylvania had something to say
about him. He is a self-made man and
a highly esteemed citizen.
“Of course,” said Col. Estlll, "there
are many other prominent men, the
Parkers, who apparently own h-.tf of
the farms along the line of Syivanla
Railroad from Rooky Ford to the coun
ty site, and to be a Screven county
Parker is a good indorsement, socially
and financially. I met a few of them, a
dozen or so. They are the banner far
mers of Screven. Then there are the
Mocks and the Basemores; they can
also be counted by the dozen. I was
told if I met a light or red haired man
he was a Mock, and if he was black
haired he was likely to be a Basemore.
Of course, that would not leave many
varieties of hair for the remainder of
the population, and I only tell the tale
as it was told to me.”
Col. Estill paid a compliment to the
Telephone and the Peoples' Press,
which supplies Screven county
with the news. Messrs. Hobby
and Bussey are editors of the Tele
phone. The first named Is also re
ceiver of the Sylvania Railroad.
“Doubtless, if the court will let him
manage the railroad for a while," said
Col. Estill, “he will make it a good
road. I saw indications of proposed
improvements In the way of new cross
ties, and there may be new rails some
where. Mr. R. K. Bryan is the editor
of People’s Press. With two good news
papers, Screven county should be well
advertised. I also had the pleasure
of meeting my old friends, Hon. Tom
Oliver, Judge H. T. Mathews and oth
ers. and made the acquaintance of
Abraham Burke, Esq., the county
treasurer, a veteran of the old Twen
ty-fifth Georgia, and Mr. Hol
lingworth of the same regiment.
They are great admirers of
Congressman Lester, who was adju
tant general of the brigade (Wilson's)
in which they served their country.
The last named gentleman has a son
named Rufus Estill. He Intended to
name him after Mr Lester, but not
knowing what “E” in the congress
man's name stands for, (nor neither do
t.) he put Estill in and risked it. Now
there are several hundred people whom
I should like to say something about,
but they must take the will for the
<eed. There would be a column of
Taylors, Nunnellys, Reddicks, Kittles,
Kemps, Stewarts, Howards. Scotts,
Waters. Braggs, Morels, Larescys,
Lovetts, Powells, Laffittes, Hughes,
Crosbys, Jeffers, Shely, Grimes, etc.
Screven is one of the oldest coun
ties of the state. It was laid out in
the last decade of the eighteenth cen
tury from Burke, Effingham and Bul
loch. It was named in honor of Gen.
James Screven, who fell mortally
wounded near Medway Church, Lib
erty county, while reconnoltering the
enemy’s position, Nov. 24, 1778. The
remains of this early martyr to Amer
ican liberty lie in the old Medway
churchyard. The second greatest bat
tle on Georgia soil during the Revolu
tion, was fought near Briar Creek,
Screven county, and like that later
battle In the same year at Savannah,
resulted disastrously to the Americans.
“Screven,” said Col. Estlll, "Is one
of the best agricultural counties in the
state. and almost anything can be
grown on its soil. It is famous for
the good grade of its cotton, which is
the principal product. It Is one
of the growing counties, showing an
increase of over S3 per cent, in popu
lation in the past ten years. Its popu
lation by the census of 1900 Is 19,252.
The total enrollment of school children
Is 3,942. 1,704 being white and 2,238 col
ored. The Chance House Is the hostelry
of the town. The name is not Califor
nian, an abbreviation of ‘Last Chance,’
or something of that kind, but is that
of the proprietor, Mr. Chance. It is a
wei'-kept. comfortable house."
“We had quite a car full of people
going to Sylvania,” Col. Estill
said, “mostly attorneys and trav
eling men. and a few farmers,
among the latter Col. John Tom Par
ker, one of the largest and most suc
cessful planters in the county. I was
met at Rocky Ford by Mr. J. W. A.
Parker, who took me to his house, gave
me a bed. a good fire and an alarm
dock, the latter to wake me up In time
for the train, all of which were useful
and acceptable. At Rooky Ford I met
Mr. W. J. Chempman, the proprietor Of
the Rocky Ford Brick Works, which
makes a very handsome brick, the clay
ip the vicinity being par'icularly well
adapted for making bricks. In the
morning I waited alone at the station
during that ‘darkest hour which is just
before the dawn,' for the coming of
the Central train which would waft
me homeward. It came in due time
and was very welcome. My trip was in
the rain from ‘start to finish.’ but I
enjoyed it. nevertheless, excepting
waiting for the train, and that was not
the railroad’s fault, but my bad luck.
Schedules can’t be made to suit every
one. I have every reason to think that
Screven county will give me very near
ly every vote it has in the guberna
torial contest."
