ewept over the stock market to-day
wrought havoc while it lasted,
which disappeared almost as
quickly as it came. A review of the
dap ? net changes reveals not a few
gains, and even the worst of the losses
are confined to the moderate propor
tions.
Unfortunately for those who sold
their stocks, either from fright at the
crumbling tendency of prices or from
necessity to repay borrowed money,
the final prices of the day by no means
represented the prices at which the
largest part of the day’s sales were
made-
There was a time during the mar
ket when there was no apparent de
mand for stocks at any price. Orders
to sell a few hundred shares could
only be executed at concessions of 1 to
3 points from the preceding sale. Col
orado Fuel fell an extreme 11%; Amal
gamated Copper, 10; Tennessee CX>al,
9k Lake Brie and Western, 8%; St.
Paul 7%; Brooklyn Transit, 7%;
United States Steel preferred, 7%; Su
gar, 6%; United States Steel, 6%;
Union Pacific, 5%; Missouri Pacific,
51s: Metropolitan Street Railway, 5%;
Metropolitan Securities, 5; Consolidated
Gas, Louisville and Nashville, 4%,
and many others lesser amounts.
Dig Drop iu Prices.
These low prices represented a drop
from the high level of this week on
Monday of such figures as 24 for Amal
gamated Copper, 21 for Colorado Fuel,
lot* for Tennessee Coal, 11% for Unit
ed States Steel preferred, 11% for
Union Pacific, 14% for Sugar, 12% for
Brooklyn Transit and 12 for St. Paul.
The source of the selling was not ac
curately known, and it seemed to
come from widely distributed sources.
The call money rate went slightly
above the season's previous maximum
—but as everybody was liquidating
loans, the actual supply of cash was
being replenished instead of depleted.
The severe break in the foreign ex
change market reflected a quick resort
to that source of relief and there were
large offerings of bankers’ finance bills
in that market.
London Bought Heavily.
London's heavy absorption of our
stocks on the break also made a large
supply of exchange. The same was
true of foreign purchases of cotton and
grain on the break in those markets
under the reflected pressure from the
stock market. The extreme weakness
of Amalgamated Copper had a reflex
effect in the market for copper metal
both here and in London.
There was the usual gathering of
"bargain hunters" on any severe break
in prices of stocks and there was evi
dence of investment buying of a more
substantial and sustained character.
The improvement in the health of the
market by reason of the sweeping out
of weak holders was very obvious in
the late dealings. There was no se
rious consideration of news develop
ments, the speculative inflation and Its
rupture being held to amply account
for the break.
Bonds Also Affected.
The bond market was affected in
sympathy with stocks, but in less de
gree. Total sales, par value, $9,211,-

Daily Stock Letter.
Savannah, Ga., Dec. B.—Transactions
to-day were again on an enormous
scale, considerably exceeding in
amount those of yesterday, in the first
hour there was a flood of liquidating
sales which carried demoralization into
prices and almost into speculative sen
timent. The selling converged upon
"Amalgamated Copper" In conse
quence of sensational out givings of a
prominent Boston manipulator. There
was scarcely a rally of importance un
til the decline of this stock reached
9% per cent, from last night, as mar
gins ran out, or stop orders were
reached throughout the general list.
Price plunged downward violently,
breaking half or one per cent, between
sales. The chief sufferers were St.
Paul, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific,
Missouri Pacific, Canadian Pacific,
Reading, Louisville and Nashville and
Illinois Central in the railway list. In
St. Paul the loss reached almost 8 per
cent, at one time. In the industrials
Sugar fell 7, Colorado Fuel about 10,
Tennessee Coal and Iron considerably
over 5 and many others 3@4 per cent
apiece. The notable feature of the
break was the rumors of Stock Ex
change embarrassments. Call money
did not rise above 4% per cent. For
eign exchange was much lower, but
steadied later. Before the noon hour
the liquidation pressure showed some
signs of relaxation. From 59c Amal
gamated Copper rallied 3 per cent. It
did not subsequently sell back to the
lowest and finally advanced over 7 per
cent, from the lowest, and closed with
in a few points of last night. The list
gradually steadied itself and in the
last half hour became decidedly strong,
with recoveries that in many Instances
re-established quotations at or near
last night's level. It was generally
conceded that there had been an enor
mous wiping out of accounts In com
mission houses. London was a heavy
buyer. The market closed active and
stfclng. Total sales 2,888,106.
We have the following from our cor
respondent:
We find on careful investigation
amongst our friends this afternoon in
the commission business, that the mar
ket must be badly oversold to-night,
and at least a rally should be confi
dently expected, and probably some
thing more than a rally.
Lawson’s latest bulletin says:
Keep your head with you this trip.
Let the new comers tell what they
know. Amalgamated supporters have
more than they can take care of. The
old time market for A. C. P. is forever
done. When the public gets what I am
going to give then on Copper, they
will want the stock less than they did
to-day. After this rally there will be
much lower prices. Sell it and keep
selling it.
