GEORGIA’S CAPITAL
RATE OFF ON MUNGER BALE.
RKDUTIOV GH ANTED BV THE
RAILROAD COMMISSION.

1V Male May Prove the Dentil
Knell of the Bin Cotton Compreo
ea—Vice President Wlnburn of the
Central Assented to the Ruling,
Saying He Thought the Hate Fair.
Atlanta, Dec. 15—The Railroad Com
mission to-day granted an order reduc
ing the rate on cotton compressed by
the Munger system from Arlington to
Savannah and Brunswick to 6 cents
per 100 or 30 cents a bale. The Mun
ger fc'ale will, therefore, be transported
practically as a compressed bale, the
present charge for compressing made
by the railroads being 37V& cents a bale.
There is only one of these new com
presses in the state, that of J. S. Cow
art, at Arlington. This rate, therefore,
is only a temporary expedient, and the
question will be gone into more fully
before a system of rates for the new
style bale is promulgated.
As the new system costs to install
about one-tenth of the price of the big
steel compresses, and practically the
same results are obtained, it looks as
though there is only the scrap heap
ahead for the latter. In fact, the rail
roads say they are making no money
out of the compresses and use them
only for the purpose of getting *a con
venient package.
Vice President Wlnburn, of the Cen
tral of Georgia, assented 'to the ruling
of the commission, saying he thought
the rate granted was fair and just.
It was shown during the hearing thfat
the density of the Munger bale is con
siderably greater than that compress
ed by the old system.
Warrant for for Schools.
Gov. Terrell to-day drew his war
rant on the treasury for $267,898.82, in
favor of State School Commissioner
Merritt, who will on Friday and Satur
day send out the money for the school
teachers all over the state. Of this
amount, $8,758.78 goes to Chatham
county.
Freight Rates Effective Feb. 1.
It has been definitely decided that
the new freight rates granted to At
lanta as the result of the recent con
ferences with the railroads will go in
to effect Feb. 1, 1905. Chairman S. F.
Parrott of the Southeastern Freight
Association says the freight men are
now gathered here for the purpose of
working out the new rate system
which the reductions will entail. There

gS.OOi* for the State Fair.
The hotel men of Atlanta have
agreed without solicitation to contrib
ute $2,000 to bring the next State Fair
to Atlanta. The committee has gone
to work to raise the necessary fund,
and its members say they will be pre
pared to make a big offer for the
State Fair when the time comes.
Snow Storm In Atlanta.
Atlanta had its first snow storm of
any consequence to-day, following se
vere sleet of last night. There are
two or three broken arms and several
sprained ankles as u result, and one
or two valuable horses and mules
have been lost through breaking their
legs.

Douglas, Ga,, Dec. 15.—Very few
Coffee county farmers, were caught
in the Slump of the cotton market.
The farmers here are in a better con
dition then ever and the merchants
say that collections are good and
bountiful feed and food crops have
been raised. >
The indications now are, that Joseph
S. Walker, of Savannah, who has made
many friends during his short stay
here, will secure the contract for the
Douglas electric lighting plant.
There is no doubt, even should op
position develop that the entire ticket
of C. E. Baker for Mayor with his
board of aldermen will be elected next
Saturday by a very flattering vote.
