STOCKS PRICES OFF HIT CONFIDENCE IST THK MARKET IS SOT IMPAIRED. MANY explanations for it gi r PROFIT TAKING ON RECENT lIISE THE SIOST PROBABLE ONE. Mmlmum Rate for Call Money N\ a* 3 Per Cent.—No Anxiety Over Money Market Reflected in Move ment of Stock*—Amalgamated t opper Again Displayed Acute Re actionary Tendencies— Failure to Cull Off New England Textile Trade Strike a Disappointment. New York, Dec. 30.—T0-day’s reac tion in stocks received various expla nations, but did not materially impair the confidence with which the outlook upon the new year is regarded. The maximum rate tor call money touched to-day was a per cent. The usual estimates by bankers indicate that the inflow of currency has been sufficient on balance to offset the sub treasury absorption and leave a mar gin of gain of upwards of $4,000,000. The changes to be shown by the loan item ot to-morrow’s bank statement are likely to be large, owing to the an nual settlements. It is not probable that any deep anxiety over the money market whs reflected lit the day’s movement. Profit-Taking in Evidence. Profit-taking ori the week’s consider able rise was a more likely motive. This was first manifested in New York Central, which had its sharpest gain early in the week, finil in which profit taking made an early impression to day. Amalgamated Copper displayed rather acutely the reactionary effect of the speculative operations which caus ed its wide advance of yesterday. Some disappointment was caused by the failure to call off the New Eng land trade. strike. The various movements were abandoned on the re action. Last prices were not far from the lowest and the closing was easy. Borrds were irregular. Total sales, par value, $6,620,000. United States bonds were unchanged oh call. Sn]e of Stocks.
