P ‘ ts head 18 Ant, and

■ rft arrival in England, the proprie

■ ve hundred years, that it owes some
,[,e privilege of experimenting upon
. r scientific purposes, and the result

iitained; an annealed steel needle be

■ in d:cHfed a current from the anterior
Pj -tcrior parts of the fish, through the
| ;ors used. The force with which the
I , ric discharge is made is also very con-
f nl ble, for this philosopher tells us we may
I j e that a single medium discharge of
J ig at least equal to the electricity of
.Jen Battery ot fifteen jars, containing
■ ’thousand five hundred square inches of
(oated upon both sides, charged to its
f< t degree. But great as is the force of
,| e dijclrirge. the Uyinnotus will some
nive a double, and even a triple shock,
scarcely any interval. Nor is this nil.
•■f instinctive action it has recourse to in
... 10 argument the force of the shock, is
■jtf remarkuble.
i ;.|p Professor one day dropped a live fish,
aches long, into the tub ; upon which the
i not us turned round in such a manner
f o rtn a coil enclosing the fish, the latter
v p esentiag a diameter across it, and the
was struck motionless, ns if lightning had
through the water. The Gyranotus
jnnivJen turn to look for his prey, which
, v j n j found, lie bolted it, and then went
out seeking for more. A second smaller
was tben given him, which being hurt,
wed little signs of life ; and this he swal
apparently without “shocking it.” We
informed by Dr. Williamson, in a paper
i, communicated some years ago to the
rv! Society, that a fish already struck 1110-
itfs p.ve signs of returning animation,
h the Gymnottts observing, ho instantly’
jjiiarged another shock, which kil ed it.
“idler curious circumstance was observed
Professor Farady,—tlie Gymnotus np
jnred conscious cf tho difference of giving a
| ck to nn animate and an inanimate body.
I:J would net be provoked to discharge its
1 .vers upon the latter. When tormented
a glass rod, the creature in the first in
■flneo threw out a shock, but as if lie per
:ei;ed his mistake, lie could not be stimula
;:Jafterwards to repent it, although the mo
nent the Professor touched him with his
uads, he discharged shuck after shock. He
[refused, in like manner, to gratify the curi
oiiiyof tlie philosophers, when they [touched
l.ini witli lticlalic conductors, which he per-
Imilled them to do with indifference. It is
worthy of observation, that this is the only
specimen of the Gymnotus Electricus ever
brought over alive into this country. The
pat secret of preserving his life would np
pearto consist in keeping the water at an
| even temperature—summer and winter—of
tenuity-five degrees of Fahrenheit. After
caving been subjected to a great variety of
[ experiments, the creature is now permitted
0 enjoy the remainder of its days in honor
vole peace, and tho only occasion upon which
he is now disturbed, is when it is found ne
cessary to take h m cut of his shallow reser
voir to have it cleaned, when ho discharges
angrily enough shock after shock, which the
itteiidauts describe to be very 7 smart, even
hough he be held in several thick and well
wetted cloths, for they do not at all relish
the job.
I The Gymnotus Electricus is not the only
I endowed with this very singular pow
! er; there are other fish, especially the Tor
pedo and Silurus, which nro equal!} 7 retnark
■ble, and equally well known. The peculiar
structure which enters into the formation of
lte<r electrical organs, was first examined hy
the eminent nnntc.mist John Hunter, in the
Torpido ; and, very recently Rudolphi has
described thoir structure with great oxaci
ds in too Gymnotus Electricns.
Without entering into minute details, the
peculiarity of the organic apparatus of the
Electrical Eel seems to consist in tins, that
*lis coinposoj of u imoreus Laminae or thin
tendinous partitions, between which exists
an infinite number of small cells filled with a
tbiclush gelatinous fluid. These strata and
cell s are supplied with nerves ofunusual size,
Bll d the intensity of the electrical power is
presumed to depend on the amount of ner
vous energy accumulated in these cdls,
“hence it can bo voluntarily contracted,
furthermore, there are, it would appear,
good reasons to believe that nervous pow
er (in whatever it may consist) and elec
tricity are identical. The progress of Sci
6ncft■ has already shown the identity be
tween heat, electricity, and magnetism;
that heat may be concentrated into elec-
tricity, and this electricity reconverted into
heat; that electric force may be converted
into magnectic force, and Professor Faraday
himself discovered how. hv reactmgback again,
the magnetic force can be reconverted into
the electric force, and vice versa ; and should
the identity between electricity and nervous
power be as clearly established, one of the
most important and interesting problems in
Physiology will be solved.”
FROM CALIFORNIA.
Arrival of the Steamship Crescent
City—Another million in Gold Dust
—lntelligence from the Gold Region
Commercial Panic in California.
The U. S. Mail Steamship Crescent City,
Capt. Stoddard, from Chagres, via Kingston
and Jamaica, arrived at her wharf in New
York at half past three o’clock Friday morn
ing, bringing 342 passengers, one million dol
lars in Gold dust in the hands of the passen
gers, and twenty-two thousand five hundred
dollars gold dust on freight,
From the mining regions the accounts
though conflicting, are generally of an en
Iftiger amount of gold will be taken out this
*eaon than during any previous one, which
will be divided however, among a greater
number of miners, with perhaps less per
man, than has marked the past.
Great excitement it is said prevailed in the
business circles relative to the recent failures,
especially of banking houses, and the re
cent assignments which have been made by
some of the largest firms, have caused a
good deal of nervous apprehension among
business men. as in almost every case, was
exhibited a large nmount of indebtedness.
The Alta California of the 15th inst , says:
\\ e must attribute tho present pressure in
the money’ market, and the unsettled state
of business generally, to the losses arising
horn the three great fires with which We
have boon visited, and in the unconquerable
spirit of speculation, which has been car
ried on to so vast an extent in our communi
ty within the past year. It is supposed
however, that, the present embarrassment
will soon be over, and that, a general revival
ot business will bo experienced during the
lats ci pint of the present month ; confidence
13 even now, somewhat restored, and these
disastrous circumstances, it is expected will
bTing about highly beneficial results.
