THE DAILY OPINION.
SATURDAY MOKN1NO:: OCTOBER 1*.
Th* New Senators—Brown low ajr»
Vallandioham.—Tbfl Ohio election* wil
doubtless result in VallAndigha^i or somo
other Democrat succeeding Ben Wade In
the United States Senate; whilst the elec
tion in Tennessee will result in exchang
ing Mr. Patterson, of the Senate, and a
Johnson Democrat, for Governor, Wm. G.
Brownlow, who has already declared him
self a candidate for the position. In a cir
cular addressed to the members of the Ten
nessee Legislature, he says :
To correct misapprehensions, and in re
sponse to numerous inquiries which are ad
dressed to me, I take the liberty of an
nouncing that I am a candidate for United
States denaMfr.' .tf .honoficii with an elec
tion at your bands I snail expect to taka
my seat on the 4th of March, 1869. Provi
dence permittiug. Until that time, I ex
pect to administer the Executive Depart
ment of the State Government.
With regard to the state of my health I
have this to say, that while not aa robust
as it has been in former years, it is yet
much firmer than it was a year ago, and 1
indulge the hope that the new era upon
which our State Government has entered,
so different from the wearing conflicts ut
the past two and a half years, which were
an almost uninterrupted struggle for exis
tence, will afford me an opportunity to re
cuperate, so that, if elected, when the time
comes for mo to repair to Washington. 1
shall have regained a good degree of vigor.
To the Public.
The business of the Georgia Annual
Conference, which has Just adjourned, Ii».
so occupied my time that I have not bees
able to answer the last cari of Rev. Dr.
Harrison until now.
1 accepted his challenge to U iucct” hiia
“ in a fair and candid appeal to tiicfrwA tf
history.” I have access to a ‘ history,” the
“truth" of which I should be well pleased
to see in circulation through the South
and this consideration, more than any
other, induced me to accept tho challenge
of Dr. H. That history is contained ia
Southern Christian Advocates, and it per
tains to the political pro-slavery character
of the M. E. Church, South. I have it, also,
in Conference resolutions “on the State of
the country," in sermons, speeches, letter*
aud various other documents emanating
from bishops, distinguished clergymen,
and, in fact, from whole Conferences. 1
I have an abundant supply of “history* -
the “truth" of which I was willing to dis
cuss with Dr. H. for some time to come:
I did not propose to discu«s Dr. II.’s char
acter, either mental or moral. I did not
desire to prove any man either a knars or
a fool, but expressed a desire to discuss th«
past and present political character of th*
Southern MethodNt < hurch, in a ealm and
dignified and Christian manner. I !ielicvc4
that if tlio discussion was conducted ia
fairness and candor, and in language lie
coming Christian gentlemen, it would d»
good, not harm. I proponed that it should
lie conducted in that spirit, and that all per
sonalities should be avoided. I compli
mented the intellectual ability and t(i«
logical skill, as well as candor and fairne*^
of my proposed antagonist. But 1 could
find no words adequate to the expression
of my disappointment when in the letter
he addressed to me through the columns
of the Opinion, I discovered that his whole
object was to excite bitter prejudice
against mo personally. lie descends to
tho use of personal reflections of the mod
offensive character. A proper self-respect
constrains me, therefore, to decline answer
ing him directly. I caunot stoop to bandy
epithets with him, nor to answer the per
sonal insinuations entertained in his letter.
All “fair" and “candid ” men will see
he exults more in the prospect of assailing
me personally, and discussing what be
thinks are my “errors.” than in showing
up the real “truth of history” in regard is
the political character of his Church. I
accept his challenge to appeal fairly and
candidly to tho truth of history. He an
swers by personal abuse. I propose a
newspaper discussion: he demands a pub
lic debate, or, if in the newspapers, that I
must give him a Northern advocate-con
ditions which are impracticable, attended
with heavy expense to me and entirely
useless—for the North has long been con
vinced of the political and pro-slavery
character of his Church. If he had aimed
at an evasion of the discussion, l* it possi
ble for him to have pursued a better meth
od to accomplish his design T I am con
strained, therefore, from the spirit mani
fested by him, to decline the discussion
without some apology for hi» offensive
language, and a public pledge that, laying
aside all personalities, he will solemnly
promise to discuss the issue in the language
and spirit of a high-toned, honorable
Christian gentleman. I will not stop at
this, however, but will now notify the
public that I shall continue, with another
gentleman eminently qualified for the task,
who has also a large collection of histori
cal documents, to show up the political pro
slavery character of the Methodist Kpi*-
copal Church. South, pa»t and present; and
I shall do so without the sligiitest attempt
to dishonor the memory of the sainted
dead, or to assail the character of the vir
tuous living. I have blit one simple ob
ject—to show up the truth of history on th*
points at issue, and leave that history to
speak for itself and teach iu ow n lesson*.
J. II. Calbwkix.
!*• S.—As the Intelligencer has published
niv former card with Dr. Harrison’s tw#
letters, It will also tie kind enough to ow
lish this.
