Th* Senatorial Oomtmtt in Tkn.nk.sskr.

Ca— on Jmasks*cm Davis.—A late Wash-

-Prom official sources it is learned that
the case of Jefferson Davis will undoubt
edly l*e tried next month, whether Chief
Justice Chase sliail preside or not. Eacii
party doiirea and expects Jiutee Chaae to
fiear the case, and there is at this time no
good reason known that would prevent his
presence, should there in? no extraordina
ry delay in bringing the case before the
•«irt. But as it is expected that the trial
will last four or five weeks, thus running
«<ver a part of the term of the Supreme
fruirt. which meets on the first Monday of
rHsvinber. it is barely possible that Judge
< base may not feel warranted in entering
upon a hearing, lest lie shall be prevented
in tin* meantime from attending to his im
perative duties in the Supreme Court. Le
gal questions of vast importance are pre
pared for argument before the Circuit
< ourt, which it is desired shall be decided

Cotton.
It requires no little courage bo entertain
ami express a favorable opinion respecting
the commercial position of this great sta
ple. It has treated its friends so badly; the
losses of those who have endeavored to
maintain its price are so great that the ex
plosion of John Law’s schemes in France
must he referred to to find a parallel. Much
of these losses were the result of the set
ting of non-commercial theories against a
lew plain commercial facts. In November,
1H65. the price of middling cotton was
pushed up in this market from 44 to 65
cents per pound—from which there has
been a steady decline to the close of last
week—when the same grade sold at 18 cents
per pouud. Among the transactions re
cently effected. 500 bales sold at It cents,
which cost 56 cents per pound, the loss up
on which, exclusive of storage, insurance
and other charges, was over eighty-live
thousand dollars. And this case is one of
many. One who went into the market for a
flyer, to the extent of not more than fifty
bales, thereby lost a small fortune. The
decline that has taken place has pulled
down and bankrupted some of the oldest
and wealthiest mercantile houses in the
world.
In view' of these facts, expressions of
confidence in the staple, even at the rela
tively low prices that have been reached,
will be received with incredulity. But
then; are facts that must not lie lost sight
of.

In 1860, Mr. K., a ^prosperous business

high cost of food, cotton goods, must bo

Therefor, placing the yield at 1000,000

shall hare more than 1,GUO,000 bales to ex
port, if. Indeed, we can spare so much.
Cotton comes Into the ports slowly. The
Treasury regulations respecting tu© pay
ment of the tax are stated to bo the prin
cipal cause of the delay in getting the
crops to market. It will bo well for U10
South if there be some delay: it will servo
to restore confidence, of which there la a
marked deficiency. The available shipping
of the ports promises to be fully occupied
the next three months in supplying Great
Britain’s more pressing needs for food.—
Consequently, with immediate large re
ceipts at the ports, ;he rates of freights and

markets nearly bare, whereas, the stock
one year ago was three hundred thousand
bales. We exported last year 1,500.000 bale*
It is not probable that the exports this Year
w ill greatly exceed that figure. We have to
replenish bur stocks, instead of drawing
from them, and this alone will nearly dis-
ixise of the increased growth. Again, the
lower prices will greatly increase the con
sumption. There will be fifty per cent,
more cotton used with the price at 22o than
at over 40c. Cotton goods at low prices
