letter of Major General Pope to ^wayne,
dated November 20th. 1967, recently puhT
llshed by the National Intelligencer, and
synopsized in the New York Herald’s
Washington special dispatch of December
12th, was genuine copy, which was furnish
ed to the reporter of the Montgomery.

tion Convention, who is one of the Radical

It will be recollected that a prisoner in
Mr. Granger’s custody hak sued out a writ
of habeas corpus in Judge Bustoed’a Court,
alleging that be is restralnud qf bla liberty-
by a man who is not a legal officer. This
involves the whole question of ths <xm#U-
tutionality of the reconstruction ad* Ml,
Granger thinks that the act will be de
clared unconstitutional, and the prisonet;
ordered to be set at liberty. It is shrewdly
suspected that the so-called sheriff is peti
