Through Freights.—The Rome Courier
of yesterday learns through a private let
ter from E- E. Evans, General Eastern
Agent of the Virginia ami Tennessee Air
Line Railway, that hereafter freights from
Norfolk to Atlanta, Rome, and other places
South, will be carried in “sealed cars,” and
run on regular time schedules—about five
days to Atlanta. From New York, Phila
dclphia, or Baltimore to Norfolk, the time
is twenty-four hours. This route is be
coming very popular with our merchants.

Tlie Jew*,
Their Early Settlement in America—His
torical Eeminiscencet.
The Jews were among the pioneers who,
driven by tyranny and oppression from
• lieir homes in the old world, colonized and
peopled the new. The Puritans, however,
antidate the advent of these people into
our North American colonies, many years,
they having immigrated in 1620; while the
/(ret accounts of any Jewish exodus from
foreign shores are down to August 24,1694.
At this time people of all denominations
were compelled to flee from their natural
homes in Europe, the Jews being of the
number who sought this continent as a
refuge from political and religious ex
actions there as well as in some parts of
Asia and Africa.
On August 24, 1694. a ship arrived at
Newport, Rhode island, then tlie principal
portof entry, from one ofthe Westindia Is
lands. with a number of Jewish families
on board. These families, many of whom
were people of wealth, respectability and
general inteligenec, settled in Newport
alter arrival. ^
The second regular synagogue establish
ed in this country was at New York, in
Cheatham street, 1729. In this city at the
time above mentioned there were but few
Israelites, and for many years thereafter
not more than three hundred Jews were
known in New Amsterdam, as New York
was then called. Subsequent to 1729. vari
ous other ports of entry were opened in the
North American colonies, offering to the'
oppressed of all nations of Europe a home
and an asylum—New York, Boston. Phila
delphia and Charleston being the principal,
points to which Jewish pilgrims from the
old world wended they way. Charleston
next appears to have followed New York;
there, about 1765, tiie first Jewish syna
gogue was established. From this period
up to liSJ6 tlie Jews became a considerable
integral element of the population, and
were highly esteemed for their res pec ta-
bility. intelligence and general character.
Curing various periods they filled manyoi
ilie ollices under tlie city government, and
constituted inufch to the current literature
of the State. The most of them were en-
g igcd in commerce, a few in mechanical
pursuits, and others witii the newspaper
press, the bar and the foruin. Isaac Cor-
dozo was for many years editor and pro
prietor of tlie Evening Patriot, and during
his editorial career was considered the best
authority in questions of political economy
in the Southern country.
The States of Georgia. North Carolina.
Alabama, M ississippi. Louisiana, Kentucky.
Virginia. Tennessee, Maryland, etc., be
came the recipients of a considerable por
tion of the original settlers and their de
scendants. These people engaged in com
merce principally, a portion of them in
professional occupations, politics and the
tine arts. ,
In California (San Francisco) the Jews
are now so numerous and their influence so
great, thatsteambrs hound for foreign ports
are frequently detained when a Jewish fes
tival or fast day has occurred on these
days. In this, as with most other States,
Saturday, being . the Jewish Sabbath, is
made a holiday to the pupils of the various
schools.
In Cincinnati the Jews are very numer
ous. The seats ip the new synagogue in
that city recently sold at public auction,
brought extraordinary prices, the net re
ceipts being over $200,000, the premium on
certain seats bringing$300.
A Law Abiding People.—When the cen
sus of the United States was taken in 1860.
it was the boast of the Israelites in New
York that up to this period there was not
in this State a single Jew put on trial for
any capital offense, and that tio such thing
as a conviction or execution for such an
offense was known up to this time. The
criminal calander of the State, accessible
up tp this period, justifies this assertion. It
should be known, if it is not generallv. in
connection with this subject, that the Isra
elites in all parts of tlie world, and histo
rians have indorsed tlie assertion, that this
peculiar freedom from capital offenses, such
as murder, etc., have characterized this peo
ple from their earliest history, published
since tlie Christian era, down to the pre
sent. There have been individual excep
tions to this rule, but they have been few,
and only in such instances where the Jew
lias been the aggrieved party. This has
been partly owing to their domestic edu
cation. wherein they have been taught to
observe tlie ten commandments, bequeath
ed to them by their law-giver, Moses, in
their schools and synagogues, wherein the
same precepts and religious instructions
are observed.

Fire in Americus—Loss About $4,000//
Last night about 10}■£ o'clock, the alarm of
tire was heard in our quiet town, and it
was discovered that the kitchen on the
premises of Air. W. L. Wadsworth, was In
flames. Tlie citizens immediately rushed
to tlie scene and did all in their power to
extinguish the devouring element.
Tlie flames soon spread to another out
house. and from thence to tlie dwelling.
The dwelling was a very large one and not
quite completed. No person occupied eith
er of tlie houses on the premises. The lire
no doubt, was the work of an incendiary.
