A number of toasts will be offered. LrEsureo,December27.—Last (rightabout 4 o’clock Mr. B E. Powell's dwelling and smoke-house, about six miles from here, were consumed by fire. Nothing was saved but a few clothes and bedrteads. and they were much damaged. Tbe family was aroused by a negro out hunting, who dis >vered it in time to save them, perhapa. diu the flames. Mrs H A Barnes of Bamesville. died at the residence of Dr. Sneed on the 21st instant. She came down on Wednesday preceding to visit a sick relative, intending to return &ttnnlay, but on the morning of that day wa* taken vio lently with congestion and died on Tuesday follov.mg. Her body was ia«eu to Barnes vil/ejfor burial.——On the 23«1 instant Mr T. K- Cham less who resides about five miles in tbe country, came to town to make bis Christmas purchases. At t welve o’clock he left apparently well; at two he was fouud lying down on tbe seat of hia buggy, half a mile from home, altnoet in a lifeless condi tion. He waa taken to the house and died in a short lime His death was probably caused by congestion or heart disease. Crisler, one of our most promi nent business men, died yesterday after noon after a prolonged sickness of seve ral months She leaves a family of small children, kindred and many warm friends to mourn her death. Elbxktox, December 25 —The murder of Caroline McMahon created cbnaiderableex citement among tbe negroes in thisconnty, and bad it not been for the counsels of while men, Allen Blackwell, the alleged murderer, would have met a terrible fate at tf.e hands of his own race and color. The facts of the murder so far as they have come to light, are about as follows: Oi evening of tbe 22d Allen Blackwell, who is a shoemaker living- at Ruckersville, and who has lost ah-gand usfs a wooden pin a* a i artificial leg. was heard to make threats that be “intended to kill somebody before dajMight tbe next morning,” a* d made ar rangements with anotber negro to borrow a horse. After night he borrowed the horse and went in the direction of the place where deceased lived, ( leceased lived about three miles from Ruckeoville. The person that committed the deed rode a horse whose tracks corresponded with the tracks made by tbe home borrowed by Al len. and t ; ed tbe horse about two hundred a;.d fifty yards from the house where de ceased wss living.
