STEEL TRUST PROBE
ASKEDjNJHE H0USE
Washington.—What is expected to be
tho entering wedge in a far-reaching
line of trust investigations by congress
began before tho house committee on
rules today in tho hearing on the Stan
ley resolution, providing for a probe of
the steel trust. J
On the opening of the hearing. Rep
resentative .Stanley outlined the history
of the steel corporation and "told of the
circumstances surrounding the absorp
tion of tho Tennessee Steel and Iron
Company four years ago. He paid a
tributo to the business genius of An
drew Carnegie, but declared that since
tho steel industry had passed under the
control of J. P. Morgan It had become
one of the most ruthless monopolies In
the country.
Evidence is to be presented to show
the need of exposing the affairs of the
United States Steel Corporation to tho
searchlight of publicity.
Representative Stanley and other r«P'
resentatlves Intend to show that this
great, engine of business, while dis
claiming to be a combination In re
straint of trade, has supported a high
level of steel prices almost since its
inception.
“It was immune from prosecution
during the Roosevelt administration and
has grown bolder on the strength of
that fact” Representative Stanley al
leged today.
To Live in Crisp County.
Cordele. Ga.—Ex-Sheriff W. B. Lyons
and his son. Archie, who on Tuesday
were acquitted of the murder of Flem
ing Smith, have decided to make Crisp
county their home, so pleased are they
at the treatment they have received
here.
Walker Convicted.
Macon. Ga.—Edward Walker, who
has been on trial here for several days
charged hrith burning his wife to death,
was found guilty of murder by the Jury
this afternoon and sentenced to hang
on Mnrch 10 by Judge Felton. It was
charged by the state that Walker sat
urated his wife with gasoline and then
set Are to her.
_ New Marriage Law.
Topeka, Kans.—J. E. Williams, rep
resentative from Logan county, has in
troduced In the house a bill requiring
that all brides and bridegrooms must
have health certificates before they can.
obtain a marriage license. The bill pro
vides that a physician must pass on the
candidates not more than ten days be
fore the application for a license.
“Soda Water King” Bankrupt.
New York.—An Involuntary petition
In bankruptcy was filed against John B.
Mathews, “the soda water king.” in
United States district court today, and
Judge Holt appointed Lindsay Russell
receiver of his mineral water corpora
tlon. with a bond of $50,000. The cor
poration was capitalized at $1,000,000.

LUKE LEA ELECTED
TO THE U. S. SENATE
Nashville, Tenru—Luke Lea was to
day elected senator from Tennessee.
Preceding the eleventh ballot for sen
ator, the independents decided to with,
draw B. A. Enloe and put in Lea. The
roll call showed 131 members present,
with 66 necessary to elect* Enloe was
withdrawn and Captain Galloway nomi
nated Lea. A demonstration at once
ensued. Mr. Trezevant. of Shelby, a
regular, seconded the .nomination and
another nomination occurred. Someone
in the gallery cheered for McMUlin and
wild confusion for a while prevailed.
Representative Worley made a harmony
speech, nominating Colonel L. p. Tyson,
of Knox county.
The ballot resulted: McMUlin, 48:
Tyson. 11; Lea, 68; Wooldridge. 2.
Lea's victory was celebrated with a
great. demonstration, but a motion to
make the election unanimous was de
feated.
• Senator-elect Lea is publisher of The
Nashville Tennessean and American, the
morning paper of the Tennessee capital.
He has been active In Tennessee poli
tics only about five years. In 1906 he
led the fight In the Democratic state
convention, that nominated Malcolm R.
Patterson for governor.
On a Fishing Trip.
Fort Gaines, Ga.—A large party of
business men of this city are on a Ash
ing, trip down at Owl creek. Those in
the party are John G. Brown. Colonel
Ben .M. Turnlpseed. E. J. Hobbs, J.
Eugene Peterson and William Bryant.
They chartered a launch from Colum
bus-and will return home on Wednes
day.
Double Track To Be Completed.
Chattanooga, Tenn.—Lincoln Green,
general freight traffic agent of the
Southern railroad, was here Saturday
and stated that the double track work
of that system between this city and
Qoltewah Junction would be completed
by the latter part of February.
Postoffice Site Selected.
Statesboro, Ga.—The property of Dr.
M. M. Holland, ao it Is understood, has
been purchased by the government for
$7,500 for the site of the new postoffice
w hich will be erected at an early date.
The lot is on the. main street and in
the heart of the business section.
Goodrich Divorce Suit.
New York.—Testimony was taken to
day in the divorce suit of the most
recent wife of Nat C. Goodwin, the act
or, by Referee J. Campbell Thompson,
at hla office, 63 WaU-st.
Want Salary Increase.
Washington.—-Increased salaries,
straight civil pension system, free
speech and the right to petition con
gress are among the needs of the civil
service employees, according to resolu
tions presented at the annual meeting
of the United States Civil Service Re
tirement association, wrhich is in con
vention here for a two days session.
Commission Government
Montgomery, Ala.—Commission gov
ernment la a go in Alabama, as la in
dicated in action taken by both
branches of the legislature looking to
the drafting and passage of a general
bill providing for the commission plan
of rule In the municipalities of the
state.

Washington.—The census cotton re
port of ginning up to January 1, Is
Il.i5t.ll5 bales (counting round as
half boles) ginned from the growth
of 1910 to January 16, compared with
9.787.692 from the growth of 1909 and
12,666,203 from that of 1908.
The per cent of the last two crops
ginned to January 16 Is 57.2 for 1909
and 96.8 for 1908.
Round bales Included this year 110.-
815, compared with 146.378 for 1909 and
232,510 for 1908. Sea Island cotton in
cluded 86.411 for 1910, 91.191 for 1909
and 90,287 for 1908.
Confesses to Stealing Money.
Montgomery, Ala.—The confession of
Michael Keating, deputy clerk of the
United States court at Montgomery,
who Is under arrest In Los Angeles.
Cal., to having absconded with 82.000
government funds, was partially cor
roborated today upon a superficial ex
amination of his accounts.
Fire Threatened Town.
North Abingdon, Mass.—The entire
business section of this town was
threatened with destruction by fire for
four hours today. Help from outside
towns finally subdued the flames after
the Atwood house and three other
buildings In Korth-ave. had been
burned with a loss estimated at 880,000.
Strangled to Death.
Thief River Fade, Minn.—After 24
hours of work, detectives, discovering
the strange death of a man found throt
tled to death In the lower berth No. IS
on the Soo line's Winnipeg flyer, which
completely baffled .them, said the only
tangible clew was the discovery that
the dead man's clothing had been made
In Utica, N. Y., and that his laundry
mark was "T. H.," both of which facts
were telegraphed to the Utica police
today with a request to run down the
Identity of the victim.
Asks Pardon For Socialist.
Washington,—Representative Camp
bell. of Kansas, today asked President
Taft to pardon Fred D. Warren, editor
of a Socialistic publication at Glrnrd,
Kans., who has been sentenced to six
months In jail and to pay a line of
81,500 for violation of the United States
postal laws.
Charlton Loses Out.
Trenton, N. Je—Porter Charlton, the
young American who Is fighting extra
dition to Italy, where he la wanted to
stand trial for the murder of his wife,
Mary Scott Castle Charlton, met with
defeat at the outset of his battle to
day.
Vote on Lorimor.
Washington.—Senator Beveridge,
Indiana, made an ineffective effort In
the senate today to get a date fixed for
voting on Senator Lo rimer. He -first
proposed January 31. but Senator Bur
rows objected to this, and when a week
later waa proposed Senator Heyburn. of
Itlalav objected.
SENATORIAL DEADLOCK
IS STILL UNBROKEN
Albany, N. Yv—The senatorial dead
lock was unbroken on the fifth joint
ballot of the legislature today. One
hundred and ninety-stx votes were cast,
99 being necessary to a choice. Gov
ernor Dix received his first vote today.
The total vote was:, Sheehan, 86; De-«
pew, 81; Shepard, 1*3; Parker. 1; Lit
tleton, 3; Herrick, 3; Gerard, j; Glynn,
1; Kernan, 1; O’Brien, 1; Dix, 1.
Adherents and foes of William F.
Sheehan, Democratic candidate for
United States senator, grappled in the
final struggle ttr pick a successor to
Ch&uncey M. Depew. The present week
Is expected to bring out the greatest
bitterness that has yet been*shown. The
armistice that was calledUgst week Is
ended and from now on the conflict will
be to a finish.
Sheehan's' friends were jubilant to
day over the pronunciamento by State
Chairman Winfield Huppuch, that the
caucus choice .should be supported by
all Democrats. The insurgents. led by
State Senator Franklin D. Roosevelt,
showed an unbroken front, however, as
the legislators were gathering for the
joint ballot.

Won’t Be Secretary.
Washington.—Representative Taw-
ney, of Minnesota, after a visit to the
white house today, declared that any
mention of his name as Secretary' Nor
ton’s successor Is unauthorized. “Such
a thing has never been considered,” he
declared.
Soldiers Patrol City.
Hankow^-Chlnese soldiers patrolled
this city today following a series of
bloody riots among the native riKisha
coolies* In which nekrly 50 were killed
or wounded. Foreign marines landed
from the British gunboat Thistle and
the German gunboat Jaguar reboarded
their ships today following the arrival
of. soldiers from Wuchang, who imme
diately took charge of the situation.
