A' I « A T\TOM feoWriff ATO If Atlanta Women - Are Leaving City for the Summer IT'S a wise woman who knows where her best friend is during this time of summer flitting. Atlantans have a habit of going to one place for a fortnight, then home for a short visit and off to another place. To many peo ple this mode of short to various places appeals more strongly than spending the entire summer out of town. The short stay at home gives opportunity for seeing friends at the informal teas and dinner-dances at the country clubs and to look after the home and business affairs, while the. stay at seashore or mountain or springs varies the summer's visit, apt to become monotonous unless one Is so fortunate as to have a tour abroad or "a motoring tour in prospect. Atlanta will ■be well represented abroad this summer. Many people go over_in July and August, though the < majority of those who expect to make extensive tours in the Old World have already departed. Mr. and Mrs. John D. Little, who spend a’ part of every summer at favorite French resorts, will probably sail the latter part of July. Mrs. Little’s sisters, Mrs. Ashe > ton Starke, of Richmond, and Mrs. Henry Wortham, of Macon, also go abroad at the same time. Mr. and Mrs. John E. Murphy and their two pretty daughters, Misses Ju lia and Catherine Murphy, plan to go abroad the latter part of July for a stay of some length. , Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Dana, of New York, whose marriage was a bril- A Hant event of the spring season in At lanta. are now In Paris for an extended stay before sailing for New York Au gust 1. Mr. and Mrs. Dana have had an unusually interesting and compre hensive trip, having visited Italy, Afri ca. Russia and Germany They have just completed a trip through the fiords of Norway. Upon their arrival in New York, Mr. and Mrs. Dana wiy come to Atlanta for a short visit before go ing to Mexico, where Mr. Dana has ex- . tensive interests. Mrs. Dana was Miss ‘ Agnes Ladson, of Atlanta. The experienced traveler, accustomed to spending each summer in a tour of some kind, is liable to find it difficult to plan a new and original route each time. Mr. and Mrs. "Walter Andrews have overcome this difficulty in their case, with a trip which promises nov elty and pleasure. They leave Sunday for Portland, where, after attending the * national gathering of Elks, they take an extreme Northern trip, visiting Se attle, Vancouver and Alaska. On their return they will come through the Ca nadian Rockies and will spend some time among the snow-capped moun tains at Banff, a famous resort in the Rockies. Recent visitors to Banff are Colonel and Mrs. Robert J. Lowry and Mrs. William P. Pattlllo. Colonel and Mrs. Lowry returned during the week from a trip to New York and a visit with their niece, Mrs. Percy Smedley Darlington, of Westchester,, Pa. The Western trip does not seem to be popular this year with Atlantans, although a few people plan to visit the Western coast later in the yea,r. The motoring tour through New England and the visits at gay summer resorts are more favored than extended trips. Misses Laura Ansley and Mignon McCarty, two of the popular debutantes of the past winter, will spend next month at Toxaway. They accompany Mr. and Mrs. Edwin P. Ansley and Misses Frances and Mamie Ansley there early next week. Miss Annie Lee McKenzie, another feted debutante of the past season, will accompany her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George McKen zie, on a motoring trip through New England in July. Miss McKenzie will spend August at Toxaway with Mrs. Milton Dargan and Miss Helen Dargan. Miss Mary Helen Moody and Miss . Ruth Stallings left this week for At ’r lantic Beach to attend a house party. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Conklin leave to morrow for their summer home in Maine. A delightful Atlanta colony is now at Wrightsville. Among the popular wom en leaving tomorrow are Mrs. J. Frank M .idor, Mrs. Harry Stearns, Mrs. Jo seph Raine. Jr., Mrs. Rix Stafford, Mrs. * Charles Black, Mrs. Henry Grady and otherg. Mrs. Elizabeth Winship Rates and h< ■ young daughter. As to form, bridge parties and dinner parties give way to bowling parties, in formal dancing parties and swimming parties. Swimming parties are the latest, and. the summer pastime par excellence., This form of entertaining consists of I the swift automobile ride out to East! Lake country club, the delightful swim in the lake, followed by luncheon ors supper, as the hour demands. Groups of yoftng girls and boys, chaperoned by a few' married couples, enjoy the swim ming pat ty, which is a fad of the mo** ment. Tn the younger social contin gent are a number of really expert swimmers, and there are many who. can hold their owm In any swimming contest, based on grace or speed. Miss, Jeanne Jonas, a hostess at one of this week's "swimming parties," is one of the fine swimmers in her set. Her "chum." Miss Van Spalding, is an-; other good swimmer. Others are Misses Helen and Emogene Thorn and Mar garet Northern A number of the young women, a few years older than these girls, are de-j votees of swimming also. Miss Marloitj Goldsmith is perhaps the champion in' her class. She is spending the summer abroad, however, and many rivals are springing into view, with the summer; before them to practice in. At ths > many seashore resorts, Atlanta women, are noted for their fine swimming.) many of them having learned at East Lake. Mrs. J. Frank Meador is one of the best swimmers in the city, and for a number of years she has been a "star* performer in the aquatic sports of the resort w'here she visits. This year Mrs. Meador will spend at Wrightsville, I where several other women who are flue swimmers will also breast the waves of old Ocean. Mrs. Rix Stafford swims and does thrilling divas. She also is at Wrightsville. Mrs. W. C. \ Jarnagin, another fine swimmer. Is at the same place for the season. Miss Edna McCandless and Miss Emma Kata, Amorous are notably good swimmers among the young women of the city. An unusually large number of young women visitors have occasioned much informs! entertaining this week, which, will! be continued next week.. Among the visitors for whom the parties are being given are Miss Dorris, of Nash-, vllle, the guest of Miss Helen McCul- ; lough; Miss Alma Jagger, of South-, ampton, D. 1., visiting Miss Frances' Clarke; Miss Maida Rountree, of Quit man, the guest of Miss Laura Lee, Cooney; Miss Louise Hill, of Macon,, who is with Miss Laura Wyatt; Miss Emma Powers, of Macon, the guest of; Mrs.< Julius DeGive; Miss Yeagar, of ■ Mississippi, the guest of Miss Ferol Humphries; Miss Naomi Neal, of Flor-i . Ida. MT-s. B. M. Boykin’s house guesti Miss Edith Piper, of St. Louis, guess of Mrs. Shirley Brooks; Miss Callia Hoke Smith, with her sister, Mra Ron- j aid Ransom, and "Miss Eliza Killian, of Greenville, S. C., the guest of MIM Foote. Next week's calendar shows a num ber of affairs for the younger set, most • of which center around some one or' more of the visiting girls. Tonight Miss Helen McCullough’s dance brings this week’s series of parties to a close. This will be a pleasant affair for 30 guests at the Driving club, compliment- 1 ing Miss Dorris, of Nashville. This afternoon Miss Elizabeth Blanc’s tea; was the occasion for about 100 guests to gather at her home In the Virginian; apartments. Mieses Dorothy Harmon and Gladys Glover were the honor guests. One of the notable affairs of the week in the social world was the handsomely appointed luncheon which Mrs. Phlnizy Calhoun gave at the Driving club yes terday. The luncheon was a compli ment to Mrs. Hughes Spalding and Mrs. Alex Smith, Jr., two of the past win ter’s brides. The affair had been post poned from the early spring, when first announced, by a bereavement in the family of the hostess. Mrs. Ringland F. Kilpatrick, of New York, has been tendered a series of parties during her visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Junius G. Oglesby. Hav ing closed their apartment in New York. Mr. and Mrs Kilpatrick spend the summer at their summer home at Tom’s River, N. J., where Mrs Kil patrick will join her husband on the completion of her visit. Mrs. Robert Thomas Sterrett, of Philadelphia, is a former Atlanta girl at home on a visit. Before her recent marriage Mrs. Sterrett was Miss Nata lie Taylor and she has been pleasantly entertained since her arrival. She is now the guest of her sister, Mrs. How ard Muse, In Iwr apartment in the Marlborough. __ ¥
