UNIONS OPPOSE
BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
Labor Congress Blocks Move to
Add Teaching of Scripture
to Curriculum.
The Southeastern Labor congress has
gone on record as opposed to the move
ment to teach the Bible in the public
schools.
A recommendation to make Bible
study part of the school curriculum in
cluded in the educational committee’s
report met with a storm of protest from
many of the unionists yesterday after
noon. The proposition was voted down
after long and bitter debate.
Two Atlanta labor leaders, J j
Woodall and R. H. Harrison, were re
sponsible for the recommendation, ano
defended it vigorously.
Urges Study of Bible.
"There are too many dust-covered
Bibles in this country," declared Wood
all. "The little attention paid to Bib!-
study’ is responsible for the growing
infidelity ant} wickedness in this coun
try. The Bible should be a part of the
course in every public school."
J. C. Shaughnessy, of St. Louis, or
ganizer for the National Barbers union
took up the opposition at once.
"There are portions of the Bible," he
said, "that are unfit to be eent through
the malls, led alone be taught in the
schools. It is absurd to suggest that
it should be taught in the schools, when
the parents of many school children
make no pretense of being Christians
It is welding the cliurch with the state
an idea foreign to the American sys
tem of government."
Sees Religious Dictation,
"Why, there are hundreds of chil
dren sending their children to the pub
11c schools who do not believe in the
Bible,” said P. J. Conlon, vice president
of the International Association of Ma
chinists. of Washington. "Some believe
in the Talmud, others in the Koran,
others in nothing except the spirit of
human kindness. Why should the pub
lic school system dictate the religion o*
their school children?”
Others were milder in their opposi
tion to the idea, but none ths less firm.
Among thoae who went on record aj
opposed to teaching the Bible In the
schools, basing their objections on a
plea for less sectarianism and abso
lute religious freedom for every one
were Ben Giles, of Cedartown, Ga.; G
C. Martin, of Clinton, Ill.; J. D. Steph
ens, of the Carpenters union of Atlanta
Bill Bork, of Chattanooga; G. R. How
der, of Atlanta, and John T. Wentz,
New Orleans.
