EDITED JUIXJL IJ MARSHALL
Feeding for a Purpose
The poultry feeds to be used in any given oase depend first ou the
special purpose in fe-ding, and second, on 'lie available supply and;
cost of the same. If you are near a large city
where th-- poultry feed manufacturers have branch
houses, you can usually get your feed already
mixed and prepared ready for use, about as cheap
as you can mix it yourself, and with a goo-1 deal
less trouble to you
These feeds ar<- classified and each prepared
lor a purpose. There is chick feed for small
ehicks, and laying food for hens, ami scratch feed
for hens and growing chicks. These feeds con
tain a valuable assortment of grain and seed
which are hard to find on the market separate, if
one desires to mix his own feeds. For this rea
son it is advisable to purchase the ready-mixed
feeds, providing good, clean quality can be secured
ll' the feed contains a large per cent of trash and
refuse matter, one had better not buy it, but de
pend upon what can be secured at home.
For laying hens when market eggs are de-
sired in abundance there is nothing that will help matters along like
a good hot mash. It should be composed of wheat, oats and corn
ground together, to which add one
fourth the amount of wheat bran.
Due pound of cotton seed meal can
be added to each ten pounds of
feed. This should be cither steam
cooked or scalded with boiling wa
ter ami fed in a crumbling mass,
not sloppy. This kind of food
should be fed but once a day.
These mashes should be salted a
little arid a dash of rod pepper
every other- day will increase the
egg yield and tone up the system.
Where egs-s for hatching are the spe
cial purpose for which you are work
ing. use but a little mash food and very
little pepper. Let the mixed grain all
Ik fed dry, with all the exercise it Is

possible to obtain. It is essential that
the breeding stock be kept in hearty,
' robust health; for that reason, the soft,
hot foods so conducive to heavy egg
yield should be avoided, as they tend to
produce a soft, flabby condition of the
system, not the best for producing a ;
’ lot of fertile eggs and strong chicks.
If you are producing eggs for market
solely, feed to that end for all they '
are worth, just so you maintain the
. health of your flock. On the other
. hand, feed your breeders more sparing- i
ly, with vigor the aim and not the
number of eggs. During cold weather,
fowls need more heat-producing foods, ;
and therefore a greater proportion of
corn titan is desirable in warm weath- ,
