Hens and Hens
What a difference in children in the same family. Yes, and
what a difference in hens. One hen will lay every day in the week
■ tor wet'ks at a time and never think of becoming
broody or wanting to sit . A sister of hers will ,
lay about every third day until she lays about
i fifteen egus and then go to silting, regardless of I
I ’he lime of year, winter or summer. One hen
will lay a large smooth egg every time, all so
much alike that you can tell her <*gg wherever vou j
find it. ll<-r mate will lay a round egg one time '
and a long one the next, a large one and then a I
small one.
One lien will lay a large uniform lot of eggs
• up to the very last one she drops, while another
hen will diminish the size of the eggs as the time
passes until the last one of the litter will scarce
be larger than a pigeon’s egg. Some hens will
lay right through their moult, scarcely taking a
week's rest for that trying time. Others will
! lay straight through the winter months regard
less of the house conditions in which they are
but man,y others will not. lay in winter no matter
wli,it the surroundings are—warm feed, cold feed, meat, or what not.
Some hens prefer corn to any
other feed, ami lay well upon such .
feed; others prefer oats or rye; i
■ others will not eat oats at all, if 1
they can get anything else to eat. '
Stick a pin there.
Provide a variety for your hens and 1
then they may make their own selec
tions, getting what is best suited to
their requirements.
Some hens will lay large heavy '
shelled eggs at all times, regardless of !
whether they get much oyster shell or
lime, fathers will persist in laying a ‘
small ill-shaped, thin shelled egg; when *
fully supplied with shell-forming mate- f
rial. Some hens will eat everything in !
sight and stand around for more, al-
: ways as fat as butter, and will lay al- !
most all Hie time. Other hens tire more
aet.ie, smaller eaters and Insist upon
hustling about for whae they get. They
are never fat. but are just as good lay-
Sonie hens must find a very secluded
spot or dark place for their nest and
■ will insist upon laying in a. nest to
themselves, while other hens will lay
: out in the yard and drop their eggs
anywhere, seemingly the more public
tic- place the better they like it.
We can gather many valuable point-
, ers from watching our hens and tlvdr
various peculiarities, tine point is that
we should cater to these peculiarities
whenever they are conducive to health
| and egg pioduction, regardless of
; whether tiiv\ atv just our exact ideas
of the proper tiling or not. When we
■ find the lieu determined to lay. regard-
I less of conditions, with the weather
M-old or hot, be sure to keep that hen
, l anoUmr year. Set all her eggs, mark
I the chickens, so you can keep them also.
! | Keep tie hen that does not stop laving
to moult. While it might be said to be
advisablf. for a hen to rest at that time,
: most of our hens spend too much time
. over tlie matter. For that reason it
might be a. good idea io retain some of
| those laylng-through-moult hens.
Strive to perpetuate tlie good quail
ti(*s of honsr that lay good Rlzod CKgs
ami regular in size, neither round nor
sharp pointed, but. a good oval. The

is to be admired and valued, for Hie
never gets over fat, an<s for that reason
is less liable to disease. It is a good
plan to study your hens at odd times
when you have a moment's leisure.
You will learn many things about them
that will mean dollars and cents to you.
INDIGESTION.
Judge F. J. Marshall: Can you tell
me what is tlie matter witii my chick
ens? I have lost three with the same
trouble. They do not seem to want to
eat. Cron is packed full. They stalk
about with head and tail down and
still their combs seem to stay red until
nearly the last. They get boiled oats
twice a day and a mash of cornmeal,
ground oats and wheat bran three
times a week. I thought I was taking
good care of them. MRS. C. S. C.
Ocala, Fla.
REPLY.—Your fowls seem to
have impact cropland gastritis or
indigestion. Those that are badly
affected and weak, I would suggest,
chop their heads off and bury them.
Those but slightly sick, I think, will
get all right by changing the diet.
You are feeding too much soft food,
whicli is so conducive to indiges
tion. i would give but one mash
feed a day and the balance of the
ration should be mixed: cracked
grain fed in litter would be all tlie
better. In fact, I think it would
be better to keep a box of dry
wheat bran in reach and do away
with the mash altogether until j our
Hock gets entirely over its present
trouble, and feed lightly of tlie dry
grain. Give plenty of green stuff,
such as turnip tops, sugar beets or
sprouted oats. ■ Keep a good sup
ply of sharp grit always before
them. A chicken’s gizzard is in
tended for active work In grinding
the seeds and grains it finds in its
natural state, and when fed for
months upon soft ground food,
needing but little, if any, grinding,
the gizzard becomes inactive and
failing to take tlie food properly
from the crop, it becomes packed
and trouble follows. Keep your
liens as close to nature as you can
and you will have but little trouble.
