Naticnal Association Grows Out of
Summer Camp at Fort
Hamilton, N. Y,
NEW YORK, Sept. 30.—Coincident
with the closiag of the boys' military
instruction camp at Fort Hamilton
came the announcement of the forma
tion of a national body to carry on
the work, and to extend it in every
large city.
Acceptances to serve on the advig
ory committee of the National School
Camp Association have been received
from Major General Leonard Wood,
Rear Admiral Nathaniel R. Usher,
commandant of the Brooklyn navy
yard, and Congressman Herman A.
Metz.
An effort will be made to enroll
1,000,000 boys. This movement is in
dependent of the movement started
in Brooklyn some months ago for the
%erpetuanon of the camp at Fort
amilton under the direction of
Brooklyn citizens.
Others to Give Counsel.
In addition to the men mentioned
above, prominent men throughout
the country will have a place on the
advisory commitee, as the work of
the association, of which Frederick
L. Long is the founder and secretary,
progresses, The headquarters is at
No. 1 Broadway.
Last week the colors which have
swung in the breeze at the military
reservation at Fort Hamilton were
lowered for the first time, except at
evening retreat, since July 1.
During the intervening peglod more
than 1,000 boys have receive mllltnryl‘
training and the discipline of army|
life under the direction of United
States noncommissioned officers.
Many of this number have been in the
camp since the opening day, while
others remained for shorter periods.
Although the age of the boys ranged
down to under 12 years, and despite
the epidemic of infantile paralysis,
there was not a single case of illness
at the camp.
Had Preliminary Work,
Prior to entering the camp the boys
had preliminary training several days
a week at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, at
Fort Hamilton and at the armory of
the Twenty-second Engineers at 168th
‘street and Fort Washington avenue.
. The greatest enthusiasm has been
‘elicited from the parents of the young
sters, who are unanimous in their ver
dict that the youngsters have im
proved physically, mentally and mor
ally.

the police court here for vio
lating the traffic regulations have
buckled down to their punishment—
that of memorizing the city’s traffic
ordinance, which containg approxi
mately 5,000 words. They are under
orders to return prepared to recite
the ordinance before Judge Carl V.
Hawkins.
Frequent violations of the traffic
regulations by children necessitated
‘‘drastic action,” the court stated.

Judge Gives Man Chance to
Atone for Crime in Defiance

KANSAS CITY, Sept. 30.—James
Durham will have until January 2 to
try to win the affections of a 17-
‘year-old orphan girl. Unless he wins
her promise of marriage by that time.‘

ham appeared before Judge’ Latshaw
with a marriage certificate. They
were eager to marry. But welfare
workers objected.
Judge Latshaw at that time said he
thought it best the couple marry that
the child might have a name. The
welfare workers were obdurate, urg
ing that Durham be made an example.
The case was continued.
When the pair again appeared, the
girl, influenced by the welfare work
ers, said she had changed her mind
