| Says Chesterton
(By International News Service.)
LONDOM™, March 11.—The reform
ers who are trying to make divorce
'nn easy in (Gireat Rritain as it is in
‘the United States are ridiculed in a
'satirical treatise entitled “The Su
perstition of Divorce,” by Gilbert K.
(‘hesterton, the famous essayist.
Given a riot of divorce, he says, the
world may soon come to making its
distinctions between those “who are
married” and those “who are really
married.”
“The obvious effect of frivolous
divorce will be frivolous marriage,”
Mr. Chesterton asserts. ‘“The old
joke about choosing the wife to har
monize with the furniture might quite
logically return, not as a joke but in
reality.
“As regards marriage after divorce,
if no more alters the moral quality
of conjugal infidelity than the mere
kiss on the Bible alters (he moral
quality of perjury.”
Mr. Chesterton sees the time com
ing when a man should designate his
domestic status and offers some sug
gestions. One is to sign the let
ters “L. W.” after his name, signi
fying “lives with wife.” Another is
to attach the insignia, “N. D. Y.,”
meaning “not divorced yet.”
“It is wholly posesible that the time
will arrive when, upon entering some
strange city, a traveler will see a
stately column erected to the memory
of ‘a wife who never ran away with
a soldier, or an image of a historical
character who had not ‘bolted with
the children's governess." i

| WASHINGTON, Marck 11.—A pro
| test against the sale of small ships
iof the “lake” type was received by
{the Senate Committee on Commerce
| today in the form of a letter from
!Mathew Hale, representing producers
and shippers covering twenty-two
States,
Hale charged the government with
having disposed of ten ships to the
Lloyd Royal Belge on February 18,
aqd later three more to the same
company, while on March 9 four were
disposed of to the Societe Maratime
Francaise, making a total of seven
teen ships to foreign countries in the
last two weeks.
The letter asked :hat np further
steel cargo carrying ships be dis
posed of until Congress shall have
had time definitely to determine its
policy.
It was pointed out that the type
of ships disposed of, all under 6,000
{tons, are particularly useful to the
United States now in developing
trade between South Atlantic and
{ GuM ports and the West Indies and
'Cemvral American countries; that
while too small for trans-Atlantic
| trade, they are ideal for coastwise

Stokely, Ordinary 1. H. Bacon and

JAIL DELIVERY NIPPED,
DETOIT, March 11.—Federal of
ficers announce they nipped an in
surrection among the 215 alleged
Communists awaiting deportation at
Fort Wayne when they took nine of
the alleged “reds.” constituing a so
called ‘“‘soviet,” from the fort and
transferred them to the ocounty jail
of Oakland County at Pontiac. By
this move, the authorities say, a
wholesale jail delivery of reds which
