Five paving ordinances were
adopted on final passage at Monday
afternoon’s meeting of the City Coun
¢il, The meeting lasted only forty
minutes and was one of the shortest
in years. The paving ordinances
adopted were
To repave Mangum streer, from
Simpson street to Jones avenue, with
bituminous macadam,
To pave Cone street, between Ma -
rietta and Lauckie streets, with as
yhalt on the present Belgian blocks
To pave Mangum gtreet, from
Simpson street to Foundry street
with bituminous macadam,
To pave Rosedale roaa, from Green
wood aveiue to the city limits, wit
concrete,
To pave Mell avenue, from De Kali
avenue to Melendon avenue, with
bituminous macadam.
It was agreed alsp that the Fifth
Ward place on the Carnegie Library
board be declared vacant and a suc
cessor appointed, Councilman J. R
Nutting offered the resolution and
called attention to the rules that if
members of the Carnegie Library
were absent from two or more meet
ings their seats could be declared
vacant,

If any one had gathered the idea that
Pasquale Amato's powers were weakening
| because of his absence last season from
| the Metropolitan Opera, the ldea would
| have been dispelled after hearing his re
;cmu at the Auditorium Monday night
when, after singing the great and throat-
Iluxmg “Prologue,” he returned to the
platform and at once gave the ''Largo al
Factotum” from “The Barber of Beville,’
an air described as "“‘at once the hope and
despair of baritones,” with its marvelously
rapid staccato and its surprising ascents
and descents of the scale. Amato sang
it not only with heauty of veice and ex
| cellence of phrasing, but gave it a world
of comedy spirit. It was received with
almost as much enthusiasm as the beloved
“Toremdor,” which he gave as a later en
core, the first time he has sung it in
Atlanta,

eral songs, mostly by Italian ecmposers,
and sang them delightfully, but several
lof them were bits of humor which lost
much of their value through being in =
sirange tongue., At the cloge he and Miss
Kitty Beale, the soprano, sang together
the Henschel “Gondoliera” duet, which
they were obliged to repeat in response to
applause.
Miss Beale was received with enthusias
tic applause from the lovely ‘“‘caro nome’
which opened her program to the duet ut
the close. Besides the “Rigoletto” air
she sang two groups of songs in English
and the air from "‘Gianni Schicehl'” Her
voice is clear and fresh, if a little strident
at times.
The recital closed the All-Star Beries for
the season, and the program announced
that the Evans-Saiter Musical Bureau ex
pects to present an even more interesting
series next fall and winter,

Baturday matinee,
The play ran in New York two years,
and in Chicago twelve months. It is an
A. H. Woods production, and Woods |is
famous for the hits he has produced in
the lust few geasons. This is the first
opportunity smaller cities have had to see
this laughing show. Seats are now on

Barnoeld's trained animal act, introducing
dogs and monkeys in clever feats, was thc

Jeff Healey and company furnished
merriment in a rollicking skit, involving
the efforts of a business man to stamp out
bachelorhood among bhis employces.
Kennedy and Kramer offered a combi
nation nuinber of songs, dances and baunjo
selections,
The University Trio, three young mén
with splendid voices, made a hit in a
series of tuneful and catchy songs. Halley
and Noble were pleasing in a comedy sing
ing and dancing act.
The picture featured Bessie Barriscale
in “The Luck of Geraldine Laird,” an in
teresting drama.

Millard and Marlin have a Chinese set
ting and costumes for a pretty Chinese
Song. They also give a funny impersona
tions of Bowery “toughs.” The girl is
exceptionally pretty and clever. Roth are
excellent dancers,
Porter J. White and Company present an
interesting playlet, *The Visitor,” featur
ing Mr. White, Chester Beach and Miss
Maude Hackett,
Emmett Briscoe and Co., & singer, black
face comedian and girl dancer were enter
taining. The singing was good, but the
comedy could have been much better.

ords, for in Willlam Martin Williams,
whose apointment was announced
from Washington Monday, he picked
for commissioner of internal rev
enue a hero of the football field
whos glory has never been dimmed
by time. For the new commissioner
is none other than “Billy” Williams
of Auburn, one of the great figures
in athletic annals of the South.
. Billy Williams was half-back on
the Auburn team from 1893 to 1896,
and for the last two years was cap
tain of the Orange and Blue. He
wasg chogsen by Coach Heisman of
“eorgia Tech for half-back on the
"amous “All Time” team. He has
never lost his activk interest in |
ithleties and he is stil “Billy Wll-|
liams of Auburn,’ for he finds time
to help coach the Alabamans a fewl
days every fall. He was coach at
Clemson College for two years after
graduation at Auburn, but afterward
returned to his alma mater ‘as coach.
“Tich” Tichenor, the midget quar
| ter-back of the days when Auburnl
was at the height of her gridiron‘
glory, now an Atlanta lawyer and
golfer, was a team mate of Billy Wil- ‘
liams and his pal. He wasn't a bit
surprised Tuesday to hear that Billy
had been given a high place, It
wouldn’'t have surpriscd “Tick” if
Billy had been made ambassador to
the Court of St. James or secretary
of war. Because nothing could be
too good for Billy.
“You never could tell about Billy,
or Mart, as we somctimes called
him.” said Mr, Tichenor. “He had
a poker face. He looked so innocent
vau’'d think he was an angel, but he
was mixed up in all the student
deviltry the Auburn campus ever
knew and a lot that never was found
out,
“I remember one year we had a
pretty girl as sponsor at our train
ing table, and every one of us was
violcntly in love with her. except me,
of course, and Billy Williams he
adonted a policy of cold indifference
to feminine charms asnd the jealous
rivals were glad to believe he wast '
out of the running. But one day 1!
happened to take a look under the|

Mrs. Anna R. Waldorf, 22, who gives
Buffalo, N. Y., as her reridence, at
tempted suicide Sunday night on
board the destroyer Haraden of the
United States navy at the navy yard
here
She was the dinner guest of En
sign W, B. Collier und after dinner
went into a stateroom to put on her
wraps. Three officers sitting in the
wardroom heard a shot and found
Mrs, Waldorf with a buller wound
in her breast. A wote Hn the desk
addressed to Ensign Jollier, said:
'“I love you more than life. My life
has been a wreck, and I refuse to
’wreck yours, so I will end it allL

She was taken to the navnl hos
pital where her conaition is reported
as favorable,

First National Bank recently took
over the business of the Coweta Na
tional Bank and in a statement
showed that the individual deposits
were $1,112,210.69, the first bank to
show deposits amounting to more
than $1,000,000.
The capital, surplus and profits of
this bank are nearing the half mil
lion mark, the total resources and
liabilities shown being $1,885,858.64.
