The reason Gov. Smith advanced
i in his report to tlie lHgislatute for
removing Joseph M. BrOWn as a
member of the railroad eommis

j known to the public. The com

because he opposed a reduction of

people of Georgia knew that 011

Dear Times:—l send von a short
sketch of the annual picnic of the
Cloverdale Sunday school held at
George Foresters spring last Sat
u rdayv
The morning opened bright and
sunny and the people came in
buggies-) wagons and surries and
some on foot from all the surround
ing country. And a more orderly
or well behaved people both old
and young never met at Foresters
spring or anywhere else as to that
matter.
J. W. Hamic was master of cer
emonies and at the appointed hour
called everybody to Order and
made an excellent speech of wel
come and the object of the picnic.
The exercises began by recitations
declamations and dialogues by the
young folksy interspersed by ex
cellent singing by the Bradford
and Moore class of Cave Springs.
The little fellows speeches and rec
itations were fine. I would like to
name every little boy and girl by
name and praise their performance
but hav n’t space.
The temperance lecture given
by Ilcrshel Forester, Lilly Thomas
and the signing of the pledge was
well rendered. Ed Bible, John
Moore, Hershel Forester, John
Bible and Ed Amos did their
parts Well. Jennie Bible as Aunt
Jeiusha in the Tired Mother
brought the house down. Ger
trude Stewart as the book agent
did well.
Esq John Cantrell made the
biggest speech of life. His address
was entertaining and well received
by-everyone and we believe much
good- will be huhod Gore his

frown on the tabeof anyone, smiles
were seen on every countenance.
Oh my, what good things there
was to eat, everyone had plenty
and several baskets taken up.
And I now call upon all to come
next year the third Saturday in
July 1909 and let us all again en
joy ourselves another day as we
did this. And ye editor and your
dear one are especially invited
(and the little ones too.)
I think these annual picnics are
the best investments we can make.
It builds up a stronger friendship
with each other that continues
through life. Yours truly 4
DON’T CUT THE PEACH
TREES.
There‘will probably be no affront
to over bountiful Dan e Nature by
the cutting down Of peach trees,
as suggested irV the rep > is'nom
Georgia. The growe s who have
seen the lucious fruit rotting upon
the trees and whose income have
been reduced by the lower prices
that anlurally followed the enor
mous yield, are worthy of a modi
cum ot sympathy. They are en
titled to make money if they can
and what with poor crops, or none)
one year and an ov<-rahiindame
the next, they do not always do so.
Also, they have the right, as busi
ness men to take any legitimate
steps to make their business profit 1
able, but we do not believe that
they will adopt the tree chopping
p!; n.
Waiving the right of the public
to cheap fruit in bountiful years,
the reason there will probably be
no great destruction of trees is be
cause the plan is not practicable.
In the first place it would be diffi
cult, if not impossible, for a suffi
cient number of growers to reach
an agreement that would effectu
ally curtail the crop. The fruit
raising industry is too ox en i>e,
there are too many men of differ
ent minds, of varying degrees ot
integrity, to make the crop lunihi
tion scheme a success. Many
growers would agree to nothing o.
the kind and m the event of high
er prices from a dec reus and yield
they would reap the benefit of
their fellows’ sacrifice. Possibly a
few who enUred into the agree
ment would make a liberal con
struction of it after his neighbor’s
trees had been cut down; Cottnn
growers have talked of reducing
their crops in order to get higher
prices, but the plan has never been
put into effect in extenso and lias
never proven a huge success wher
ever it lias been tiiedt We believe
that the peach men would meet
with tile same ex*peiiencc 4 the
same failme.
It seems to us that an increase
mi toe canning industry would be a
i>ett> r f-o’ntion of the problem. If
there is not already an almost un
limited market for good canned
peaches, one could and should he
made. Every h* usevvife -knows
how expensi / • g od canned peach
es are in win er when bought in
the stores;
Consumption is decreased, uim
doubted ly, by the high ebst. Then
instead of cutting down peach
trees, why not can the fruit that
cannot be sohf to advantage? It
can be sold if it is of good quality
and the price is rot beyond the
teach of t m av rage family;
