GEORGIA LEGISLATURE.
Double-Barreled Sessions cf the House
Begun.
Atlanta, C.a., Aug. 10. —Just three
more todays to-wit: Monday, Tues
day and Wednesday, and the present
session of the general assemble of
Georgia will end. In that time tne
senate lias several important pieces
cf legislation to enact and in all prob
ability the senate will meet both af
ternoon and evening ’during the ie
maining days, in order to have a clean
slate when Wednesday arrives.
Will an extra s ssicn be called
t'his is the question that is agii :uiog
the minds of the senators and, m
most eases, the answer lias been in
the affirmative.
The reason ior such an answer is
that while the senate may enact all
the legislation now before it into laws,
it will not be able to reach the con
vict "question owing to the fact that
the joint investigating committee aas
completed its investigation and
eral of the senators have expressed
themselves as desirous of heating 'he
findings of this committee befoie
reaching any conclusion or enacting
any law; still a law may oe
passed in these three days, as it is
understood IVat the governor will ve
to any bjil relating to the convict
question ua* a tembney to yr >-

long the leave, he personally being in
favor of abolishing it immediately.
The business dll hand of most im
portance for this week is the primary
election bill, the agricultural schools
support bill and .the anti-lobbying bill.
These bills were mentioned in the
governor’s message cn last Wednes
day urging the senate to act upon
these measures at this session, as ne
deemed them of utmost importance.
Another measure the governor spoke
of was a bill to amend the registra
tion laws of the stale, The senate
passed a bill of Senator Martin by
substitute Saturday on these lines,
and it was immediately transmit
ted to the house.
The bill appropriating $55,000 in
IDO9 to the agricultural schools of
the state was favorably reported on
by the senate appropriation commit
tee at its meeting on Saturday, and
this bill will no doubt be taken up
the lirst tiling.
Atlanta, Aug. 11. —At the morning
session of the house Monday that
body, by a decisive vote, declared in
favor of a return to the annual pay
ment of pensions to confederate vet
erans and their widows, instead of
quarterly, as is now the case, and
in favor of allowing the firemen and
policemen of the cities to ride free
on street cars.

At this session, also, the house
passed up a number of pension reso
lutions, appropriated $45,000 for the
support and maintenance of the Geoi'-
gia state sanitarium at Miliedg ville,
in addition to the $700,000 already ap
propriated, and $5,000 for the state
board of health laboratory, where .an
ti-toxin for the treatment of rabies is
being furnished free by the state of
afflicted patients.
There was 'an unusually large at
tendance in the house for a Monday
morning session and that body got
down to business at once.
Mr Hall, of Bibb, got a special or
der up to have his bill to create a
state board of tax assessors to fix
a taxable yaliie of corporation prop-
up for consideration, aiid was
defeated.
Mr. Candler, chairman of the house
committee to investigate the convict
lease system, introduced a resolution,
which was adopted. It asked that
the house committee be .allowed, and
empowered, to sit through vacation
and to report, with its findings and
report to the governor, who would
be allowed to make such recommenda.
tions to the next general assembly,
as he saw fit.

dent J'iyiit. of the senate, and Speua
er Slaton, of the house, went “bane,”
and with it the valedictory:
“This house stands adjourned, sine
(.lie; Cod bless you.” According to.
the official clock of the house, vvhicn
hud been stopped, it was only S:2T
p. m. t while that in the senate pointed
to 9:50.
This was made necessary by the .
law which makes the legislature ad
journ by midnight of the 501ir day'.
Contrary to the general expectation
the governor did not send in a spe
cial message calling the legislature
in extra session and naming the day
luring the evening, but will publish
a proclamation to this effect during
the week, calling it for probably
August 21. and at the same time nam
mg the bills to be acted upon.
The convict bill is sure to be one;
the anti-lobby bill will probably be
another, and efforts are being made
to have still otners named.
The bone of contention in the leg
islaiure, at the close, was the appro
priation btil for the support of the
Agricultural college at Athens —$25,*
000 for this year, and $50,000 for
1909.
The senate tacked on an amend

and the same amount for the station,
