SOUND DOCTRINE
Why do the Churches of Christ sing without the accompain-
ment of mechanical musical instrument?
Thanks for this question. It is not because we personally dis¬
like that kind of music. We believe the Bible thoroughly furnishes
us with knowledge as how to be well pleasing unto God. Let us
consider the methods of teaching used in the Bible first.
First, we have the direct command: Jesus says, “Go into alii
the world and preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15.) Second, by ex¬
ample: “And upon the first day of the week when the disciples,
came together to break bread” (Acts 20:7). Each week has a first
(’ey so to follow the example herein set forth we meet on the first
day of each week to break bread. Third, we have inferred teach¬
ing: For instance, the Philippian jailer read, “Sirs, what must I
do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
a: ' Ui u shalt be saved and thy house, and they spake unto him
the Word of the Lord and to all that were in his house, and he
took thei . ! e same hour of the night and washed their stripes,
and was baptized he and all his straightway” (Acts 16:30-34).
Nothing said about his repentence, but it is inferred. The fact that
he washed their stripes and set meat before them (V. 34), shows
that he had repented. Just a little while before Paul and Silas
were made fast in stocks in the inner prison after being beaten,
but now the jailer is a changed man so we cannot miss seeing his
repentence. II Tim. 2.15 reads thus: “Stury to show thyself ap¬
proved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.” Again, “All scripture is given
by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for re-proof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of
God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works”
(II Tim. 3:16-17). Let us keep in mind we believe this in this short
study of church music.
The first mention of singing appears in the New Testament
in th( form of praise. “And when they had sung an hymn they
went outside into the Mount of Olives” (Mark 14:26). “I will sing
with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also” (I Cor.
14:15). “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spirit¬
ual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts” (Eph. 5:19).
“Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teach¬
ing and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spirit¬
ual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Col. 3:
16). “Saying I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in tht
midst of the church will I sing praise unto the” <Heb. 2:12). Now
in the preceding quotation, we have an example, a declaration ol
purpose and two direct commands to sing. Not one word said a-
bout play and sing. The New Testament is as silent as the grave
on that. There is not one single example where the New Testa¬
ment church ever played while they sang their praises unto God.
No, sir; not one! The melody is made to God and not to enter¬
tain the congregation or for a show to be heard of men. God did
not say make music; He said sing! He specified singing and that
excludes all other kinds.
But some have said, “But what about David?” David was und¬
er the old law, but we are under a new covenant. They did many
things under the law that we cannot do—burnt offerings for in¬
stance. In fact, friends, the Bible tells us that “Whosoever of you
are justified by the law, ye are fallen from Grace” (Gal. 5:4). "For
Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that be-

lieveth” (Rom. 10:4). So let us not go back and bring something
they did under the old law to try to justify our acts of worship
today. Let us worship according to the law of spirit of life in
Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:2). According to the perfect law of liberty
(Jas. 1:25; 2:12). In spirit and in truth (Jno. 4:24). And sanctify
them through thy truth; thy word is truth (Jno. 17:17). Then to
worship him in truth we sing and do not play instruments be¬
cause they are not authorized in the New Testament. Then, if we
use them we are adding to God’s Word.
Due to our deep reverence to God, we do not add to the teach¬
ings of His Word. Hence, we merely sing as he authorizes us. Then
we know we are pleasing to God. “For I testify unto every man
that heareth the words of prophecy of this book; if any man shall
add unto these things. God shall add unto him the plagues that
are written in this book. And if any man shall take away from the
Words of the Book of this prophecy, God shall take away
part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the
things«written in this book” (Rev. 22:18-19.)

To market,
To market ♦. *
When the Southern Railway System goes “to
market,” it does its buying from a “shopping
list” of 65,000 different items. ..and buys about
sixty-one million dollars worth in a year.
Using almost everything...from toothpicks
to crossties, from pins to steel rails...there are
few articles produced in the South that the
Southern doesn’t buy.
And there are few cities, or towns, or counties
in the South that do not feel the helpful effect
of railway purchases. They ring local cash reg¬
isters, stimulate local trade, and provide jobs
for thousands of workers in other industries
.. . year after year.
«
Thus, through its purchases, through ths
taxes it pays, through the 50,000 railroad jobs it
provides and the vital transportation service it
renders, the Southern Railway Systerr*. really
Serves the South”...and so helps it to grow
and prosper.
