Very few people are willing to do as stated here. Some do not know enough to contend and others are so well pleased that they say most any way will be alright. But now as in the time of Jude we need to contend for the faith. Are you ready to do so and do you be¬ lieve it ought to be done? Exhortation Needed Jude wrote them to contend i me iaith which was once tor all delivered to the Saints (Jude) 1:3. Evidently then some aid not want to do any conten- aing ior the taith and Jude had to wrne and ask that they do so. Contend means to make 1 vigorous efforts, strive in de¬ bate, argue, dispute earnestly. In all this giving reasons for what is said in the word of God jesus spent much of his time arguing with the scribes. Paul was an expert in disputing for he did so for two full years in the school of one Tyrannus( Acts 19:9-10). God also argued with the devil about Job, and with Peter about going to the Gentiles and got him to go. So it is well for all to contend for the faith as Jude says. For What Contend? Contend for the faith which was once delivered to the Sa- ints(Jude 1:3). Not the feelings and the thoughts of man, or what some now claim as a vision* Not for a faith, but THE FAITH. Not what some sinner declared was said to him. But just what was delivered to such Saints as Paul, Peter, and oth¬ ers that the Lord inspired. They preached what is written in the Word and that we must heed All gospel preachers are to the same thing, or the curse of God will be on them (Gal. 1:8). li this was done all would spe¬ ak the same thing and there would be unity among the people religiously. How To Contend Jude said earnestly (Jude 1:3). Woodiawn Baptist Church Announces Singing To Be Held The Woodiawn Baptist Chur¬ ch wishes to announce the (ollcwing services: O'Clock. LOOKING AHEAD by GEORGE S. BENSON President—Harding College Searcy. Arkansas Employment First People who work in the fields, In mills, mines and shops, on railroads and in industry generally, are to be congratulated upon President Truman’s choice of Fred M. Vin¬ son, the new Secretary of the Treas¬ ury of the United States. His under¬ taking is enormous, delicate and vital. But it is my belief that no¬ body else in government is quite as well qualified to handle the job as- Vinson. The new cabinet member knows taxes. Things he has said already prove that he is keenly aware of two things that are currently the most important facts about taxes. (1) High taxes are necessary, now and for some time to come. (2) Wrongly devised taxes in the United States can wreck the financial struc¬ ture of the entire world in a few months. Dark Ages might visit the earth again. A Dependable Thing The “yankee dollar” is one of few known quantities left in the finan¬ cial world. While this condition lasts, there is a way for weak and depleted countries to gain industrial and then financial strength. The dol¬ lar will remain good so long as Uncle Sam keeps meeting his obli¬ gations promptly, fulfilling prom¬ ises and paying the interest on his stupendous national debt. Our debt is so big and America’s moral obligations are so exacting that taxes must be high after the war, much higher than they have ever been in peaceful years before. Government has no way to get mon¬ ey except by taxing its citizens. Con¬ sequently the citizens have to be prosperous. There must be full em¬ ployment, plenty of jobs at good wages—otherwise not enough taxes. | Holding our Ground The world is relying on the sol¬ vency of America, on the soundness of the dollar, and it all depends on Jobs. Mr. Vinson said: “Taxes should be levied in such a way that they have the least harmful effect on the expansion of business invest¬ ment and the creation of jobs be¬ cause productive employment is the source of ... revenue which the gov¬ ernment collects from taxes.” The Secretary’s eye was not on taxes alone. In a recently published report he made it clear that pro-^ ductive employment is the foun¬ dation of America’s living standard (highest in the world), the source of j all income and the basis of pros-: perity for business and agricul¬ ture. We may be assured that Vin¬ son will always do his best to pre¬ vent ruination of jobs by taxing busi¬ ness to a standstill. A Rational Economy Here is a powerful and rational sentence from Vinson’s pen: “The sooner uncertainties in the post-war tax structure are removed, the soon¬ er business management will be inclined to make firm commitments for expansion and the faster men can be put back to work following the wholesale cancellation of con¬ tracts that will occur with the un¬ conditional surrender of Japan.” Buy Victory Bonds There is to be no foolishness about it. Not trying to ridicule, or laugh it off- or make light of it. Not mocking about it but using only witty and smart as the world might say, but sincere and earnest. Believing and do¬ ing only what is commanded in the word. Why Contend For The Faith? Exhorted to do so (Jude 1:3). This aone there will be of the same mind and there will be no ai visions among us (Cor. 1:10 tveryone will Oe oelieving the same thing and following only one book the Bible. All speak¬ ing the oracle of God or not speaking at all (Peter 4:11). What a blessing this would be and the world would believe that God had sent his son into the world (John 17:21). Teach¬ ing people to do all that the Saviour commanded and noth¬ ing more (Matt. 28:19-20). This would mean safety and surety for eternal life. Whai Did The Faith Teach? This is found in the New Testament and there we must look to see what it is. Jesus said, "He that believeth ana is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16:16)- "Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38). When they were such as should be saved the Lord added them to the chur ch (Acts 2:38). Thus being faith¬ ful unto death the crown of life will be given (Rev. 2:10). Walk¬ ing in the light one is cleaned by the blood (John 1:7). Doing whatsoever Jesus commanded and being his friend (John 15:14) overcome and not have your name blotted out, but clothed in white (Rev- 3:5). For only those who do this will of the Father will enter into the King¬ dom of Heaven (Matt. 7:21). This do and contend for it al¬ ways. Welcome to the churches of Christ. Sound Doctrine, P. O.
