MAKERS OF THE FAMOUS ALLIED BRAND THE DADE COUNTY TIMES: TRENTON, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 194j NEW TESTAMENT CONVERSION What is conversion? Conver¬ sion is not a convulsion! It does not take place in a nightmare. Webster defines the verb “con¬ vert” as “to turn, or to change ” Now for a Bible definition: “Re¬ pent, therefore, and be convert¬ ed, that your sins may be blot¬ ted out ” (Acts 3:19). In supply¬ ing the words “turn again” for “converted,” as they appear in the Revised Version, we have the expression, “Repent, therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out.” Hence, conversion is a turning; a turn¬ ing from the service of sin to the service of Christ- Just what part of the sinner is converted or changed? Unques¬ tionably every part that has been alienated from God thru sin- First, the sinner is away from God as respecting his heart (Jere- 17:9). The heart is the workshop where all evil thoughts and deeds originate (Matt. 15:19). Hence the heart of the sinner must be converted, or changed. But how? By faith (Acts 15:9, Romans 10:10). Thus by a change of heart we mean a change of affections .... a change that destroys the love of sin and establishes the love of God in the heart of the sinner. But a change of heart alone is not the whole process of con¬ version Second, the sinner is away from God as respecting his life. He is alienated by “wicked works” (Col. 1:21). But how is the sinner’s life converted, or changed? By repentance (Acts * WHAT HAS VIRGIN/A GOT THAT GE G/A HASN'T?? VIRGINIA HAS a tourist attraction in its “Endless Caverns” and, in 1940, tourists paid $305,250 to see them — Natural Bridge was visited by 350,000 — Stratford. Hall, birth¬ place of Robert E. Lee, attracted more than 14,000 — and 950,807 toured the Shenandoah National Park. Conservatively, that’s more than $500,000 in admission fees for these four attractions alone! The money made difficult by all of Virginia’s tourist attractions is to estimate! On top of this, it’s a known fact that $97,000,000 (that’s ninety-seven million dol¬ lars!) went to Virginia hotels, restaurants, retail stores, garages, etc.— in just one pre¬ war year! GEORGIA HAS caves! Georgia has battle¬ fields! Georgia has beautiful scenery! Geor¬ gia has historic houses! There’s hardly % a square yard in our state that doesn’t havfe SOMETHING that would be attractive to tourists. But nearly all our Indian mounds are corn¬ fields — our caves are caving in — our historic houses in most instances are not prepared for visitors — our battlefields are unmarked. Georgia’s tourist attractions are an un¬ worked gold mine. We predict that they will soon be enriching our state with a new income of millions of dollars a year. Virginia has shown that it can easily be done. But a change of life is not the entire¬ ty of conversion- Therefore, thirdly, the sinner is away from God as respecting his relationship to the world and to God. He must be brought in¬ to a new relationship with God, Christ and the Holy Spirit. This ihange of state brings a man into the kingdom of God (Col- 1:13). But what brings about this change? (Read Galatians 3:27). The apostle here affirms that baptism is that act which puts one into Christ. The word “into” is a preposition that de¬ notes action out of one state into another . . . from the with¬ out to the within—after bap¬ tism he is in Christ- There are no degrees in a state; one is ei¬ ther in or out of Christ, just as he is either married or unmar¬ ried, or just as he is a citizen or an alien. But this translation by baptism is null and void with¬ out being preceded by the change of life by repentance. Hence, Peter said to the con¬ vinced believers on Pentecost, who inquired “What shall we do?”: “Repent and be baptized every one of you." Acts 2:38) But both the change of relation¬ ship by baptism and the change of life by repentance are null and void without a change of heart by faith. (Heb. 11:6)- Thus we can see that baptism is the dividing line between the world and the church of Jesus Christ- Yet some would declare that it is non-essential- The act of baptism is initiatory; it in¬ ducts him who is turned or con¬ verted in heart and life, into the PRIZES AND CONTEST GROUPS tyoiaty tyiaufi Open to boys and girls under 18 Open to all Georgia servieemen years of age. and women, discharged or in $500 Victory Bond — 1st Prize service. $300 Victory Bond — 2nd Prize $500 Victory Bond 1st Prize $100 Victory Bonds — 3rd & 4th Prizes — $ 50 Victory Bonds — Next 5 Prizes $300 Victory Bond — 2nd Prize $ 25 Victory Bonds — Next 20 Prizes $100 Victory Bond — 3rd Prize $ 50 Victory Bonds — Next 6 Prizes Open to all persons 18 years of ^?^eicc age and over, except servicemen A cash prize of $500.00 will be and women. given to EACH town which is the $500 Victory Bond — 1st Prize residence of first-prize winners in $300 Victory Bond — 2nd Prize $100 $ 50 Victory Victory Bonds Bonds — 3rd Next & 5 4th Prizes Prizes the YOUNG FOLKS.
