Okapi Seems Made Up of Giraffe, Horse, Zebra, Ox If naturalists of the 19th century believed they had discovered all of the world’s large animals, they were mistaken. The rare and re¬ markable okapi was not found until 1900, in the deep forests of Belgian Congo. The okapi is a walking puzzle. It has the legs of a zebra, the head of a giraffe, and the thick neck of a work horse. Its body is that of an ante¬ lope, and its tail and hoofs like those of an ox. The strange crea¬ ture has a two-foot-long blue tongue. And its skeleton is pre¬ cisely the same as that of a pre¬ historic beast which lived on the island of Crete in the Mediter¬ ranean sea some 10,000,000 years ago.
