FAITH Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Heb. 11:1). The word “substance” is derived from two words: “sub,” which means under, and “stance,” which means to stand. Hence, substance” means to stand un¬ der or support. Therefore, faith supports our hope. As for the second part of the definition, “faith is the evidence of things not seen,” the word “evidence” means clearness, that which fur¬ nishes any manner of proof. So then by faith we see the unseen. (II Cor. 4:18). To illustrate: Jesus said, “In my Father’s house there are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and pre¬ pare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto my¬ self; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:2, 3). Though we do not see it with the fleshly eye, yet we are as¬ sured through faith in the tes¬ timony of Jesus Christ that it truly exists, and is being pre¬ pared for those who serve Christ here. Why have faith? There are many who contend that we are only r„r place jut in all the gospel where “faith only” is found is James 2:24, which reads: “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and NOT by faith only.” Further, is it not strange that a vast multitude of people would seize upon faith and maintain that we are saved by it at the exclusion of all else, when, tho vital and essential as it is, it is excelled by another virtue? I Cor. 13:13 reads: “And now abideth faith, hope and i love, iwvu, these three: LII1CC. BUT DU 1 THE JimSi GREATES OF THESE IS LOVE.” But why have faith? “With-! out faith it is impossible to please God: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” (Heb. 11:6). That passage elim- inates infant church member- ship. Can a baby believe? “But that no man is justified by the law, in the sight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith.” (Gal. 3:11, 12). What is of faith? The gospel of Christ is of faith. See Romans 1:16 and 17. Thus, to live spiritually, we must live by faith in the gos-i Gospel of Christ, Post Office Box 15, Trenton, Georgia. Welcome to the Church of Christ at Trenton. CAMP WILL DISCUSS THE GOVERNOR’S RACE W S B Tuesday, June 11 6:30 P. M. Seeks Endorsement « On Hfs Record EOGCNE COOK Attorney - Genera! On the eve of leaving for Wash¬ ington to resume hearings on Geor¬ gia’s aH-important freight rate cases, Attorney - General Eugene Cook announced formally his can¬ didacy for a full term in that office. “While I shall be engaged before the courts in the trial of the freight rate action for much of the cam¬ paign period, I hope to see many of my friends over Georgia before the race is over," Cook said, emphasiz¬ ing the importance of the action in the United States Supreme Court to reduce Southern freight rates to national levels for the benefit of Georgia farmers and industries. Cook is seeking an endorsement term as Attorney-General on his record in that post and as Revenue Commissioner of Georgia, where he reorganized cohection methods both to produce added revenue for the State and to make them more con¬ venient for taxpayers. the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” (Eph. 6:16). Jesus used that shield in resisting the tempta¬ tions of Satan, as recorded in Matthew 4. So we see that with¬ out faith it is impossible to please God, we live by faith, and resist sin with it. One other question: how do we obtain faith? Many people are of the opinion that faith can be had independent of, and ' l e Parate , and , apart from the ’ , ° rd<3f ® od Your Bi ble reads: ‘ So ^en faith cometh by hear- . hearing word * ng ’ by the of 0 ' (Rom - T j de J e I s ™ a conversion described in ^ the word °V was 6 Ap0St not ? heard eS ?
