BAD WEATHER
By Menchew Macbeth
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Caroline love beauty and the
sweet lovely things of this world
for she was an artist at heart
and she strived to shut her eyes
to the harsh realities about her.
So she sat and wept at the un¬
lovely struggle called life while
the old tough rooster boiled in
the pot on the heater. Is there
anything more tragic than
holy day spent in aching loneli¬
ness worrying over a loved one?
For Carl was gone this Sunday.
Something about a car, but she
dropping Sde ^ into Wel1 place worn piece pattern by
,
j piece. She held the bitter cup
close and drank deeply and age
took that rare opportunity to
| wipe from a big her slice of life’s young-
ness face. She knew
she could have a good fullgrown
CI 7 a nd nobody would be the
wiser but what’d be the use?
Could she make something fine
out °f the material fate had
Placed in her hands? It looked
hopeless- The devil was having
his day for instead of sleeping
h °ff her man was out drink-
some more. The Holy Sab-
bah! She looked at the ►
it said two o’clock. At
j that outside. instant Her she heart heard jumped footsteps up
in her throat as she flew to the
door. It was Carl. There was
something about him that was
different—that caused her to
stay quiet and wonder. She
fixed his dinner in silence—her
heart aching at the strangeness
of his manner, the complete un¬
healthy day surrounding them
He made foolish faces at the
boys, causing them to laugh in
glee. The redness of his eyes
I was a warning in themselves. He
ate with his dirty hand and
dirty face, never looking at her
who served him so faithfully.
Suddenly he laid down the
chicken leg he was eating and
got up and set the plate on the
table. She felt scared, troubled,
but she ventured to say feebly,
“What’s wrong?” He turned on
her such a look as she had never
before seen and said in a funny
queer voice, “It’s raw.” Raw!”
She was dumfounded. She had
cooked and cooked the rooster
—and her and the boys had al¬
ready eaten of the meat and
dumplings. “But I cooked it all
day, nearly,” she protested. He
held the pot up in her face and
said in deadly anger, as if she
wasn’t fit to shoot at, “Se that?
It’s not done!” and he lit an
eye of the small oil stove and set
the already overcooked dump¬
lings on it, only letting it stay
long enough to black the pot,
scorch the dumplings and fill the
room with a bitter black smoke,'
for he was not used to cheap in j
stoves’ antics. Caroline was
helpless tears, protesting over
and over that it was done. His
manner continued to be one of
anger and scorn, her tears only
made it worse- All the pent-up
bitterness suddenly burst forth,
from Caroline’s here sobbing long- lips j '
“I’M not staying any
er!” she cried, her eyes blazing.'
He sneered easily at her and
said indifferently, “Go ahead,”,
and prepared for bed- Anger,
swelled up inside her tortured
body like waves of lava in a
seething volcano. She went
stumbling out the door, tears
blinding her sight.
(To be continued)
Georgia had the first woman
to be sworn in as a member of
the Senate of the United States.
