X EDITORIAL ^ JUST SUPPOSE Just suppose that a member of your family was.one of the number of tuberculosis sufferers who died in Dade county during tiie year that is coming to an end within the next two weeks? Just suppose that you were one of the sufferers from this dread disease, and that there was no place available for you to receive proper care or treatment? These may be only suppo¬ sitions to you, but stark realities to your neighbor or some other fellow citizen. Sympathy alone, like faith, availeth nothing. Unless our sympathy is so sincere that it provokes us to action, it is ineffect¬ ive and vain. There is one way that now presents a means to show our sympathy for the unfortunate sufferers of the Great White Plague, Tuberculosis. Let us answer the call of suffering humanity, and BUY Christmas Seals without stint. -:x:- OUR MARRIAGE LAW EVILS Following on the heels of Chattanooga’s disgraceful divorce racket exposure, where marriages were annulled instanter, and often behind closed doors of secret chambers of a judge who has been operating a divorce mill for years, these same officials are holding up their hands in horror, alledging they have discovered a “marriage racket” being operated in nearby north Georgia counties. Offering this information, apparently, as an alibi for their illegal and unholy divorce mills, they are asking that this “mar¬ riage racket” be stopped, to save them from their sihs. Much publicity has been given the Ordinaries and Justices fo Peace in Dade and Walker counties, Georgia, some just, much ol it unjust. We admit Georgia’s marriage laws allowing easy marriages, should be repealed or amended, providing for a wait¬ ing period of several days between the issuing of a marriage license and the saying of the marriage vows. But in connection with an amendment to provide this wait¬ ing pel iod, we are strongly in favor of making it compulsory that before a marriage license can be issued, each of the applicants be required to undergo a physical examinations by a reputable physician, and be given a health certificate, stating that the applicant is not afflicted with a venereal disease. Passage of a law providing for a “waiting period,” and also a health certificate before a wedding can be consumated, will eliminate hasty marriages; and as Ralp McGill, able editor of the Atlanta Constitution plainly expresses it, “will prevent some slick poolroom pimp or some chippy-chasing city dude, in session oi an active pos¬ case of gonorrhea or syphilis, to marry some pooi girl who has been made drunk with booze or dope.” A number of other states have enacted such laws, and they have been successfully enforcing them for the past several Alter remaining quiet years. for several years while the divorce mills of Chattanooga were daily grinding out divorces, against of even •some our service men who were far away on foreign soil giv¬ ing their lull measure of devotion to their homeland, the min- lsters °f Chattanooga peacefully slept. Now that the ol this divorce racket exposure was made by members of the Chattanooga ASS0Ciat !u n ’ these Same ministers are Passing resolutions condemning rnnH this evil, and in their enthusiasm are reaching bey¬ ond state lines into Georgia, where they are “astounded” to learn hat a so-called “marriage racket” is in operation. If distance ends enchantment, the perspective beyond state lines evidently enlaiges conditions found in our neighboring back yard- ur jte °ur Representatives in the General Assembly of marriage marr£t’ p W w iaws COnV providing ™ es again for health on Januar certificates - V 13, 1947, to introduce ng penod, and fight and a waflt- strenuously for its enactment. ^LflJUUULit.iLSlJLilJLiULgJLlLO_OJUULO_gJL^ g Q Q 0 o o o o o n 0 Q 0 0 0 0 r lilc is h Hmj Jfflcrnj Christmas Cn M (the ilahr Coimtu Cimes b J ^^7nnnrTo^rTinnnnnrB~B~a o o t o o o~innnnnnnr5'o gtnnnnnr B Head River News By Janie Sue Forester Miss ......
