FORESTER
Having somewhat recovered
from the serious wounds received
while Chrismas shopping, did
some visiting around in Dade
during the holidays and last
week-end.
Saturday night, by the way, I
went over to the Dade High Gym
and saw two mighty fine basket¬
ball games. Our county has
some mighty fine “timber” for
A-l basketball teams. Come to
think about it, I wasn’t such a
bad performer on the hardwood,
some twenty or twenty-five years
ago—ah shucks. We had some
teams back then not to be sneez¬
ed at—For example: What would
an opposing team think when
they came out on a court and
focussed their all-seeing eyes on
such brawn as the writer, Jack
Pells, Zeke and Roy Morrison,
Thomas Grady Hughes, Roy
Street, “Vic” Quinton, Robert
Forester, Hubert, Nello and G.
C. Austin- brother. I’m telling
you, we’d make ’em quiver in
their boots. All we had was an
outdoor court, but we kept her
up in good shape.
Now, back to the games Sat¬
urday night—As stated, T was
1 ecovering from my
shopping wounds and
v'asn’t in too good a physical
condition, and frankly, ran a
big risk of taking a
as a result of conditions
there at th" Gvm—got so
could hardly stand it and
me so mad I could hardly stand
myself.
I understand there was a pe¬
tition passed around recently
the County Board of Education
to fix up the High School Gym¬
nasium and that no action as
yet has been taken in that
tion. I am anxious for my name
to be placed on that petition, for
this is a movement which should
demand the immediate atten¬
tion of everyone. I don’t
just how much money it
take tn fix the Gym up in good
shape, but surely it wouldn’t take
much and by doggies. I’m 100
per cent for it. With the ceiling
completed, dressing rooms re¬
conditioned and some kind of a
heating system other than ordi¬
nary coal stoves, our Gym would
he a perfectly good one. Another
erandstand could be erected on
the south side to take care of
fans who have not been attend¬
ing events held at the Gym be¬
cause of present conditions.
Frankly, I think it is imperative
that our Gymnasium be fixed
un in top notch shape—If it were,
some kind of recreational activ¬
ity could and would be going on
there practically the year round.
The members of the Board of
Education and the School Super¬
intendent are mighty fine men
and I believe if they will consider
the importance of this matter
from its various angles that they
will take immediate action—
even if it takes scraping the
bottom of the barrel. If the cost
ran $1,000 or $5,000, I feel that
the money would be wisely spent
and such an action would
with the hearty approval of
citizens of the county as a

you’ll do this, I’ll help the
girls and grown ups shout Halle-
lujah from the housetops. And
more than that—if either or all
of you get skinned up or criti¬
cally injured in a Christmas
shopping jam. I’ll visit you in
the hospital and be of help to
you in every possible way. Please
don’t put this off until
summer—do it now—The job
will require just a few' days. A
bunch of us “has-beens” might
want to use the Gym for the
purpose of limbering up
creaking joints and just
how much better it would be
our boys and girls. You
will surely admit that our
ought to be fixed up. and in
event that you think there is
enough money available, let
pick about two of your
and two or three others of

more comment. You’ll do
right now, won’t you? Fine,
am indeed glad that your

County Agent’s
Column
December 29, 1947
During the month of December
farm families spent some time
taking inventory of what they
they had accomplished during
the year and planning for the
coming year. Farm families in
Dade county have just completed
a series of community meetings
and a county wide meeting was
held just before Christmas, at
which the group working as com¬
mittees made some definite rec¬
ommendations for the agricul¬
tural program for 1948.
This planning group was of the
opinion that more can be ac¬
complished through organiza-
ization and with a planned re¬
creational program. In this way
they feel the farm youth will
have more incentive for staying
on the farm and becoming use¬
ful citizens in their home county.
Other major points stressed
by the planning commttee are
soil improvement and soil build¬
ing practices, food production
for home use and for market,
home improvement, livestock and
poultry improvement and mar¬
keting. The recommendations
for carrying out the long range
farm program will be distribu¬
ted to all farm families and
plans will be discussed in com¬
munity meetings that will
held early in the year. These
recommendations will also
carried in this new'spaper.
It is now' time for orders to
be placed for pine seedlings
These seedlings are again being
made available, free, from
TV A to be used by farmers for
erosion control. Any
w'ho is interested in putting out
pine seedlings is urged to make
application to the county
office before January 15. There
are also available a few yellow
poplar and black locust
lines. These seedliings will be
distributed in bundles of 600,
1200 or 1800 trees to a bundle.
Six hundred seedlings is enough
to plant approximatly a
acre. The supply is limited,
it is important that
be made early.
