Health For Al!
Proper care of the Teeth
Good teeth are not the only
factors in sound health, personal
attractiveness and economic sue-
cess, but they are important to
ad three.
Our smile and our speech are
among the first things noticed
in our daily business and social
contacts. But only bad impres-
gions can result from ugly de _
cayed teeth, or gaping spaces
where teeth should be. The sad
f ac t i s that such unattractive
anc j unhealthful conditions are
often due to carelessness and
neglect. |
j The food we eat nourishes our
teeth as it does other parts of
the body. The same well-balan-
ced diet necessary to general
well-being is essential to the pre- i
servation, as well as the forma-
lion, of sound, healthy teeth.
The major function of the
teeth is the grinding and cutting |
of food, the first step in diges- I
lion. When teeth are diseased,
broken cr missing, this means
that it is just that much more
difficult for the person to digest
his food properly.
Decay of teeth is probably due
to a combination of many fact¬
ors. Dentists b lieve that decay
starts from outside the tooth.
When food particles, particular¬
ly sugar, become lodged on or
between the teeth, bacteria,
which are always present in the
mouth, act on the particles to
nroduce acids which disolve a
tooth’s enamel and permit decay
to start.
A tiny cavity becomes larger
is the products of bacterial ac¬
tion destroy more enamel. Then
if neglected, the cavity may
reach into the center of the
tooth where the nerves and blood !
vessels are located. Disease-pro- i
ducing bacteria, spreading with I
the cavity, may enter the blood
stream from the tooth’s center ■
and go to various parts oi the j
body. That is how diseased
teeth are sometimes responsible
lor setting up infection in the
heart, the kidneys, joints and
other places.
To help ward off tooth decay,
the teeth should be kept clean i
and the dentist visited regularly. ;
The teeth should be cleaned at
jeast twice a day, upon arising
and before going to bed.
Recently it has been shown
that fiourine may help prevent
tooth decay. Some communities
| experimenting with adding
{Email amounts of fiourine to the
, community water supply for this
j purpose. Some dentists advo-
j cate applying a flourine-con-
taining preparation to the teeth
of children.
Your dentist is your best
source of information on all
phases of dental health’. He can
advise you properly on the de-
' sireability of applying fiourine
j to teeth, as well as nutritional
needs for the teeth,, and proper
brushing and cleansing. Never
put off visits to the dentist until
your teeth “hurt.” Visit him
