YOUR CONGRESSMAN REPORTS
Communist Spies
The conviction of Alger Hiss,
udy Coplon and Gubichev is
clear evidence that there has
ted for a long time an ex¬
tensive spy ring in the United
es. The admission of Hans
Klaus that he had given much
irmation on atomic energy
and our progress in making
atom and hydrogen bombs to
the Russians further Illustrates
just how damaging to our na¬
tional defense such spies can
be.
Senator Joe McCarthy has
! made extravagant charges
against our State Department
to the effect that it is honey-
I combed with subversives and
j Communists. He has not yet
jbeen able to substantiate any of
his claims. As a matter of fact,
he has rehashing cases that
have already been investigated
by the F. B. I. or the Loyalty
Review Board, and nri Uinsp those
charged with disloyalty either
acquitted or fired Irom their
jobs- Nevertheless, his charges
have upset many people. While
I do not believe that his charges
are anything more than potty
politics, nevertheless, it is true
i that Red Spies are a real men¬
ace to our national safety. To
curb their activities and to pre-
vent their doing any real dam-
age to our country, the House
has just taken three steps.
Anti-Spy Legislation
The first step was to pass H.
R. 4703 on March 14th, by a vote
cf 3G8-2. This bill doubles the
penalty for conspiracy to reveal
secret information, and extends
the period of limitation for
prosecution from 3 to 10 years.
The second step was to allot
to the Committee on Un-Ame¬
rican Activities $150,000 for the
continuation of its investigation
of Communist and other sub¬
versive activities. At one time
the powers of this committee
were used improprely, although
I have always supported it with
adequate appropriations. But at
present, under the direction of
Congressman Jchn Wood of
Georgia’s Ninth District, the
committee is shunning the head
lines and is doing really cons¬
tructive work. So I was happy
to vote for the increased appro-
Cloverdale Home
monstration Club
The Cloverdale Home Demon¬
stration Club met March 24th at
the heme of Mrs. M. E. Newman
with 14 present. The meeting
opened with a song, then a pray¬
er by Mrs. Byron Forester and
the devotional by Mrs. Charles
Bible. Next was the roll call and
reading of the minutes by the
secretary.
The duties of our Fair Com¬
mittee were discussed again.
Miss Vestal told us about the
Council Meeting April 4 with a
demonstration on party refresh¬
ments. She also told us to be
thinking about Home Demons¬
tration week that will be the
first week in May and to try to
plan an exhibit cr something
special for that time. It was de¬
cided that we would change our
meeting time from 1:30 to 2:00
next meeting.
Miss Vestal gave us a demon¬
stration on making reed baskets.
Several games were played and
enjoyed by everyone and deli¬
cious refreshments were served
by the hostess.
Hooker H. D. Club met
The Hooker Home Demons¬
tration Club met Thursday
March 23rd at* the home of Mrs.
Lily Mae. Drew. The program
began as Mrs. Kirchmeyer gave
the devotionals.
The president, Mrs. Bradfield
had been called to Memphis,
Tenn., on account of the illness
of her mother and Mrs. Mit-
chum presided.
An interesting program was
given by the Program director,
Mrs. C. M. Smith.
Miss Vestal gave an interest¬
ing demonstration on reed
weaving.
Delicious refreshments were
served by the hostess.

The third step taken by the
House tor the protection of our
nation against spies, was the
action of its appropriation com¬
mittee in allowing Mr. Edgar
Hoover and his FBI all the mo¬
ney for which he asked. The
FBI under Mr. Hoover has done
a remarkable job. This ad¬
ditional appropriation will en¬
able the organization to hire
more experts and buy more
equipment so that it can do a
more efective job
Co-operative Housing Defeated
In my last report I told you
0 j> m y position on the question
of , the proposal for . co-operative
housings whereby a new govern-
men t a i bank would have been
set up to make loans co _
op e ralive groups for building
houseS) at 3 y 4% interest> for a
per j od 0 f up s jxty three years
As I predicted, this feature of
the bill was defeated. We then
passed the bill without that
; eature It extends Title I of the
FH A act> other desirable pro
visions for lendlng money for
the construction of homes. Co-
Operatives can qualify under
these provisions on the same
term as Veterans and other per¬
sons and groups wanting to
borrow money to build homes.
The difference is that under the
bill as it was passed, they are
not given preferencial status as
was at first proposed.
Hoover Commission Report
The Committee on Expendi¬
tures in the Executive Depart¬
ments, of which I am a mem¬
ber, has been holding hearings
on some of the twenty-one re¬
organization plans in line with
the Hoover Commission Recom¬
mendations, recently sent down
by the President.
While some objections have
been raised by different groups,
it is probable that most of them
wil be allowed to become a law.
