Late Tuesday afternoon fires were built in the stoves to warm the gym for the basket¬ ball game that evening. Maybe they got too hot. In any case about 5 P. M. when the fire was discovered, the gym building was so much afire that it was impossible to save it. This is a calamity for the en¬ tire county. This building was used by all who played bsaket ball and for the Square Dances which everyone enjoyed and which raised money for the Dade High School athletic equipment which was all lost in the fire. We now have no place for our County Fair. The loss of our gym is a county loss and we must not sit back and say it cannot be re¬ built. It must be rebuilt and as quickly as possible. Already many suggestions have been made as to how to get started and how to raise money to do this. First, there is some insur ance on the building (but none on the several thousand dollars worth of athletic equipment lost). Second, the Lions Club, though they do not have this much in their treasury, have voted to be responsible for a gift of $500.00. If the Legion, the Masons, Odd Fellows, Church organiza¬ tions, Home Demonstration Clubs—In other words if all clubs and organizations in the county would guarantee to give a large amount this would help to share the expense of the re¬ building. It has also been sug¬ gested that everyone in the county give a dollar toward the rebuilding. We hope there are other Ideas we have not heard about. There will have to be people come forward to volunteer to serve on a committee to orga¬ nize and plan and to see that the money which has been pledged comes in and if more is needed to raise it. This is a great challenge to all of us but particularly to the parents the school children—to see their children may still have building for their ball and o:her organized With the help of everyone the county, the gym will be built and immediately. Featuring improvements which produce unprecedented roadability and riding qualities, the beautifully redesigned 1951 line of Plymouth cars have numerous mechanical improvements and have retained their traditional roominess. The Director, S:ate Forester Guyton DeLoach, reminded Dade Countians that thousands o' acres cf the State’s valuable imb rland went up in smoke I during the 1949-’50 high-fire- I hazard season. “That season’’, DeLoach said, “is upon us once again, “and | the Commission firmly believes that a greater acquaintance with Georgia's forest fire laws and the penalties for violating these laws might go far cutting down similar timber losses in this 1950-’51 season.” The Director pointed out that violations of the State’s fire laws are divided into misde- 'meanors and felonies. “Any person”, he said “who j nHow fire to cross from his own land onto land of another owner j s guilty of a misdemeanor. If y 0U ' re a landowner, you’ve got j (h e right to burn your own land jf y 0ll so desire, but Georgia law definitely makeg you respon- ^ible to s°e the fire doesn’t burn adjoining land of another land- ownpr without that adjoining permission.” l The „ Forestry . Commission _ . . of- 1 ficial , added , , , ,, that , those who , contemplate ,___, . . burning . their ... own ” property • are required to notify J all ,, o her landowners whose , land , ,, the fire ,. might . , , conceivably . ,, y reach , should it get , out , of . con- trol. The notification should be given at least 24 hours in ad¬ vance. “Once he has set fire to his own land,” DeLoach continued, “the landowner is responsible *° see that the blaze doesn’t turn into a wildfire. If a land- owner is planning to burn off hi.s own area, he is required to D ow around the field or the area to be burned or to build some other suitable firebreak.” Director DeLoach strongly emphasized that no mgtter the person intended to set the adjoining weeds afire or whether they were set afire by accident, the violation is a mis¬ demeanor. He said that persons who willfully and maliciously set the woods of another person afire are guilty of a felony, a crime which in Georgia carries a sentence of one to two years confinement in . the State pe¬ nitentiary. “The extreme tragedy of Geor gia’s forestland situation,” the State Forester commented, “is that these fire laws are violated continually day after day. Our hope during 1951 is that the vio¬ lations will be greatly redunced a reduction we wish to bring about by making each Georgia citizen familiar not only with the penalties awaiting the law¬ breaker, but, more importantly, to realize the tremendous bene¬ fit which comes of keeping green one of Georgia’s top- ranking natural resources —its woodlands.
