(Continued from first page) terial with which to work: s ide the numerous types of gar- jj en fj owers there are beautiful fi owers anc i grasses, even weed5 which will make an ar _ rangement worthy of praise, Daisies, crimson clover, vetch, goldenrod, beargrass, cane grass, pussy willow, dock, mul- len, sedum, yucca, sweet wil- dandelions, hickory buds and wild iris are among the wild varieties. If you are not i very sensitive to smell, a single tall spike of garlic in a low green container is beautiful, 1 Driftwood also makes a striking arrangement. Cut the flowers with a razor blade on a slant so the plant will soak up more moisture and plunge immediately in cold water up to the bloom. Some flowers, such as poppies, need to be charred on the ends with a match flame to seal the mois¬ ture and keep it fresh longer. Always select the best possible plant material. (Cut rose buds, rather than the full bloom since the bloom is easily shat¬ tered and the bud will open cut, thus lasting longer.) Strip off dead or dried leaves and be sure the blossoms are not bruised. Rinse dusty leaves with a small soft brush and for shinier leaves, brush on ma¬ chine oil, removing the excess with a soft cloth. Placing of Flowers In the actual arranging, place the tallest flowers first and don’t forget that a focal point is- necessary in all arrange ments. This focal point must be one fourth above the container and the whole arrangement should come to one and a half times the heights or one and a half times the length of the container. Colors should be grouped together or the ar¬ rangement will be spotty. Dark flowers belong near the bottom and the lighter above.
