TRENTON, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1953 1 Some Dade History By Dr. Coulter • The following is taken from a book. ' A Short History of Georgia" by Dr. E M Coulter, professor of history at the Uni- ver ity of Georgia.) Near Chattanooga are Look- j I cut and Sand Mountains, 1750 with elevations ranging from to j I 2392 densely feet. populated The region Trenton’s is fairly | elevation is 735 feet. Its is popu- the ! lation still small. It county ,-eaf of Dade County, formed in 1840 Its old name I was Salem. The county was I named for Major Francis L. : Dade killed in Seminole wars in Florida in 1837. Not far away 1 are abandoned coal mines; there is enough coal in these mines to supply Georgia 200 years. The mines are too f far ! from markets for working at the present time. Back when Georgia had a notorious repu¬ tation for bad prison manage¬ ment prisoners were put to work under terrible conditions in the mines. Scenery and Flowers Southwest of Trenton are dark cedars and bare cliffs. They are somber in winter, but ... warmer days resplendent iii with pinki-h dogwoods and golden-centered white Chero- ; kee roses. Close by are digni¬ fied laurels, rhodendrons, and honeysuckles. And in autumn the hickory is gold, the gum purplish, the oak reddish. The j beach sends down nice trian¬ gular brown nuts, that are de- i licacies for pigs and wild tur¬ keys. Why shouldn’t the pine change dress, too? Sad that the chestnut is gone, for its long creamy blossoms spotted the whole June landscape. Rising Fawn Rising Fawn has hacl other names. It was Hanna in 1870. With the coming of the A. G. S Ry. it was Staunton. Abandoned iron mines are near. Of special interest is Sitton’s Gulch, 1400 acres, the chasm 800 feet deep, 4 miles long. It was set aside as a refuge and recreational area. The land was a gift from the citizens of Dade County aided by Chatta¬ nooga friends. The gulch walls are sandstone worn perpendi¬ cular to Bear Creek. There is an impressive waterfall. "Dear Browny: "Issue of May 1st, under title Bit O’ Bull’ in re McBryar , Bros, removal from site of Case Hotel to intersection of Main Valley Road and White 1 Oak Gap Road drifts me back some sixty odd years. Yes, back to President Grover Cle- j veland’s boom days, when New i England City was born—born on the Lawson Taylor farm, and where town lots sold for as high as $65.00 per front foot and where was built a nice bank building, a large hotel—Dade Hotel—that would accomodate about as many as any hotel in Chattanooga at that time— 1889. "These ‘booms’ were conta¬ gious. They spread over the South — Trenton, Fort Payne, and Birmingham. All suc¬ cumbed except Birmingham, which has become the Pitts¬ burgh of the South. Then, too, Bridgeport, Ala., suffered an attack. “If I remember correctly, a man from Boston, Mass., pro¬ moted the boom of Trenton. It soon busted. Tyne'A. Havron published a paper at Trenton at that time and appearing at the head of the Brevity Col¬ umn appeared a verse: Bosler put his boom away, It got damp and rusted. When he took it out again, Oh! Bosler’s boom it busted.’ "J. A Case had built the Case Hotel. Leroy Case, his brother, sold goods in the store room of the hotel for about 18 years “John L. Case, son of J. A. Case, sold goods in the Smith & Brown brick building, on the square where now his son James is in business. "There were few residences in Trenton when I arrived. I can locate all at that time and name the occupants. One of these days I will draw a map showing the location of each house. “I intend to visit my old heme town soon and hope to see you. "I am back on my feet again but have lost some speed on ac¬ count of worn pistons and car¬ buretor may need adjusting." “Your friend, Frank Nethery. What are we going to do about it? What CAN we do about it? Some things are being done right now. Many more stand waiting for someone to get the ambition—or nerve—to take a step forward. Dave L. Brown has contri¬ buted most in a long time by offering to build a football field for Dade High in Trenton —as a gift to the children of Dade County This will get the boys out of the cow pasture and into a field close enough to town so that people can go to the games. A new. modern Dade County Health Center is almost com¬ pleted. It will be the most mo¬ dern and elaborate building in the county. But we have no dentist, and no veterinarian. Rising Fawn community has placed in the Chattanooga Area Improvement Contest for two years. A group of wide-awake citizens there keep the com,- munity clean and progressive. We enjoy some of the pret¬ tiest scenery in the entire country. We have waterfalls, canyons, caves, and spacious mountains. But nature cannot do every¬ thing for us. Much of it is left for the pepole themselves. What are we going to do about the many things needed to be done, starving for a little foresight and elbow grease? We can do nothing if we don’t at first TRY. CREDIT RESTRICTIONS ARE LIFTED ... Monthly payments J are lower! Genuifh ff w<? ...
