requested;
1. Set up a commission to
study the problem of main-

event the U. S. Supreme Court
outlaws segregation.
2. Call for a vote of the
People on a a constitution
amendment that would enable
the state to abolish its public
school . ystem and substitute
grants of educational funds to
individual children.
Beth the Senate and the
H iuse have passed these two
measures but it was felt by
many that Georgia should not
consider pausing on a constitu-

cent st Is being sponsored
again this year by the Garden
Club. La t year was the first
lime the contest had been
r unty-wide and there were
many entries from all parts of
(he county. It was a pleasure
for all to see.
Rules for the contest are
that the decoration must be
outside, or in windows to make
outside decoration and in the
Chri tmas spirit. There will be
two first prizes, one for the
door ways and one for the
yards. Ribbons will be awarded
to second, third and honorable
mention winners.
Doorways could include just
the decoration of the door or
the Inside decoration of a win¬
dow which harmonized with
*';e main decoration on the
door, or the decoration of a
walk leading up to the main
decoiation on the door, or of a
porch, decoration to point up
the door decoration Yard de-
coration can be almost any dc-

spirit. Last year besides
tifully lighted trees we had
Santa and his reindeer, a snow
man family beside a Christmas
tree with presents beneath, and
a wire, shaped into the form
of angels and lighted with all
white lights.
Both doorways and yard de¬
corations will be judged on the

or if the U S Supreme Court
ruled segregation ilegal
Some felt that the amend
ment was too hasty and ill
timed and there would ” • be
Plenty of time for the legi.da-
u on to convene in extra session
to decide on a proper coui e
after the Court has ruled on
the question. Former Governor j
E ]jj s Ana jj j n a speech, said i
>n part “It would be tragic
for the state to junk its public
sedoo j system, that the state
constitution it elf is a firm
school segregation and Georgia
should no t be stampeded into
given away their birthright
0 f free schools.
The position taken by the
opposing legislators on this
vote was not that they were
again.t segregation but
putting to a state wide vote the
question of giving up our free
school system until the U. S
Supreme Court has made its
ruling. For if the Court
nues to rule that segregation is
legal, the people of Georgia
would have no need to vote for
or against giving up their free
school system.
