Amcng we had many new j j the new ones were some children who badly in need of food, clothing,! soap and water. They were so! undernourished that two little boy.-, eight and nine years old respectively, were not any larger than a small five or six old boy. We began an investigation this family. Oh, yes, we j found plenty of people who knew ; them, had helped them had fed them, but when we asked what could be done, our was: "Do you have them your schcol now? Well, I am sorry for you.” "Oh, yes, I know them but I won’t ever help that family again.” Or, "No, we can’t help. I am sorry for the children, but because of the j parents indifference, I won’t help •” We appealed to the County Welfare, to churches, and to the Public Health Department for infoimation about them. It seems as if everybody knew them but the same story— “Sorry, but nothing we can do. ” Our principal made a special trip to see the parents .to make plans to feed the children at school, but as had been said by others he found out the par¬ ents’ indifference was a ruling- factor which kept people from helping the children. However, we did not give up. Three years ago we had a si¬ milar case in school. People had heard of the children who spent the day at school without anything to eat because of no' for lunches and nothing ( at home to prepare for lunch One morning someone knock-1 ed on ray door. When I open-/ ed it a man was standing there, who said, “I have come to see you about those children who have have nothing to eat.” j This man helped feed them and influenced others who helped also. List Monday morning a few minutes after I arrived at school this same man arrived. He came to see about our fa¬ mily of children who were varving. We told him what we kenw about the family, and different reports we had from organizations we had appealed to. He said, “I will see that the ..ns Ion hes are raid for at school.” He took money out hi own pocket and handed it to me to pay for their lunches. In a short -time he came back wi ll his wi e and rot the measurement.: for c’orbing -for all the children, g r ey said. Friday a lady came with premise of more help from the church where some those people belong, and from individuals who want these children to have a happy Christmas.
