W’heat Growers to Vote on
<J u "l a Program Continuation
July 23, 1954 Is the date when
Dade County wheat growers will
join other wheat growers
throughout the nation to de¬
whether or not the
marketing quota pro¬
gram will continue in operation
the 1955 wheat crop. This
in effect is the decision which
wheat growers will make in the
coming wheat referendum,
says Ivey, Chairman of the
Dade Agricultural Stabilization
and Conservation Committee.
Ivey points out in compliance
with the law Secretary of Agri-
cultura Ezra Taft Benson has
proclaimed marketing quotas
for the 1955 wheat crop. The
marketing quota program will
be in effect if it is approved by
at at least least two-thirds two thirds of of the the wheat wheat
growers voting in the July 23
referendum relerenaum. If If the the quota auota pio mo-
gram is approved, growers who
plant nlmt within wunin their men ujo 1935 acreage qrrpagp
allotment will be eligible to
market their 1955 wheat free ol
a marketing penalty.
Ivey also explains that if the
vote in the referendum is fa¬
vorable wheat growers who ex¬
ceed their allotment will be
subject to a 45 percent-of- par¬
ity penalty on their excess
wheat. If the vote is unfavor¬
able there will be no penalty.
To be eligible for price support
on any crop produced on the
farm in 1955 the producer must
comply with all acreage allot¬
ments established for his farm
for that year. On farms where
the crop allotments call for a
diverted acreage of more than
10 acres, a total acreage allot¬
ment will be established for the
farm and, in that case, the
farmer must stay wuthin that
total as well as individual crop
allotments to be eligible for
price supports.
In making his allotment pro¬
clamation, Secretary Benson
stated that: “The long range

ded, however, that under pres¬
ent conditions “we have no im¬

mately a two-years” supply of
wheat expected to be on hand
when this years crop is har-
vested, there is no question at
ail about the requirement for
marketing quotas and the es¬
tablishment of a national
wheat acreage allotment at the
level prescribed by law.”
Referring to the “cross-com- J I
plianee” requirement, making it
necessary for the farmer to
stay within all acieage allot-
ments established for his farm
to be eligible lo. price support,
the Secretary said; “Neither is

Chairman Ivey, advises that

ferendum .
In the referendum conducted
a year ago, for the crop now
being harvested, the vote was
390,221 to 57,536. By special act
of Congress the acreage allot¬
ment for the 1954 crop was set
at 62 million acres. The allot¬
ment for the 1955 crop is 55
million, the minimum acreage
permitted under the law.
