SUGGESTIONS FOR COTTON
PRODUCTION
1. Fit cotton into balanced
farming.
2. Select good cctton land—This
will be land that is fertile
and well drained—land on
which experience has shown
cotton grows fast and fruits
early.
3. Prepare Laid well.
4. Fertilization — Obtain soil
samples and have them ana¬
lyzed so as to show tue
amounts and kinds of ferti¬
lizers needed tv. produce an
average of a bale per acre. If
lime is recoin mended this
should b e applied at least
two months before time to
plant. Place lertilizer so as
to avoid injury to the seed
and young seedlings.
5 Planting seed—Use u wilt-
ie ;istant variety recommend¬
ed for the area. Use delinted
seed of high germination.
Treat the seed before plant¬
ing to eliminate seed-borne
diseases. Some c f the good
wilt - resistant varieties are:
Empire, Cooker’s 100, Plains
land Stonewilt. Good non¬
wilt varieties are: Stoneville
2B, DeKapine 15 and Delta-
pine Fox.
6 Planting—Plant a s soon as
the soil is warm enough fo
the seed tc germinate and
grow. Plant in rows 36 to 42
inches. Use the amount cf
seed that will assure a stand
of 25,000 to 35,000 plants per
acre. Plant the seed at the
correct depth for the kind oi
soil. This will b e 1 inch to
1 Vz inches in most instances.
7. Chemical weed control—Hand
chopping and hand hoeing
can practically be eliminated
by using a pre-merge 'appli¬
cation at the time cf plant¬
ing o f Chlo: -IPC as recom¬
mended b y experiment Sta¬
tions. A hill dropper planter
can be used, space hills 12-
15 inches apart and plant
5 to 6 seed per hill. If the
continuous d ri 11 planter is
used, use about 20 pounds of
delinted seed.
8. Cultivation—After the first
two cultivations, c u 11 i vate
shallow' and often enough to
control weeds and grass.
9. Insect control—Follow recem-
dations of Extension and ex¬
periment station entomolo¬
gist. Make regular infesta¬
tion counts.
