fHE DADE COUNTY TIMES, TRENTON, GEORGIA, THURSDAY July 26, 1656 TORNADO INFORMATION WHERE TORNADOES CAN OCCUR: Anyplace in the United States at any time of the year. They happen mostfrequently in the midwestern, southern and central states from March through September. HOW O FTEN DO THEY OCCUR: The records show that the average number of days with tornadoes varies from about 12 per year in parts of the Mid-West to legs than one per year in the Northeastern and far Western states. HOW TO RECOGNIZE A TORNADO: Usually observed as a hum®!-shaped cloud, spinning rapidly, and extending toward the earth from the base of a thundercloud. When close by, it sounds like the roar of hundreds of airplanes. TOR NADO “WEATHER" : Hot, sticky days with southerly winds and a threatening, ominous sky. However, many such day® occur without tornadoes. CLOUDS: Familiar thunderstorm cloud* are present. Mi hour or two before a tornado topsy-turvy clouds sometimes bulging down instead of up. The clouds often have a greenish-black color. appear PRECIPITATION: 9 Rain, frequently hall, preceding the tornado, with a heavy downpour after it has passed. TIME OF DAY: ----- / ^ Mostly between 3 and 7 P.M., but they have occurred at all hours. DIRECTION OF TRAVEL "X . / In most cases they m»*e from a westerly direction, usually from the southwest. LENGTH Of PATH: Usually 10 to 40 mites (the average length is 16 miles), but they may move forward tor 300 miles. WIDTH OF PATH: v. The average width is about 400 yards, but they have cut swaths over a mile in width. ^ SPEED OF TRAVEL 25 40 miles hour average, hut lltey have varied from 5 to 130 Biles per hour. 'V*. to per WIND SPEED: ■i.W- Estimated as high as 500 miles per hour within the tornado. Mrs. Womack had been em¬ ployed for several years as head of the Dade High School lunchroom. She is survived by her husd- band, Sidney p. Womack: a son, Sidney P. Womack, Jr.; grand¬ daughter, Patricia Ann mack; three brothers, Earl fery, Fort Payne, Alabama; Luke Jeffery. Valley Head, Ala¬ bama; and Charlie Jeffery, Trenton. Funeral serviices were from the United Church of with the Rev. Hosea officiating. Pallbearers Cecil Jeffery, Sam Jeffery, Jeffery, Tillman Reeves, Durham, and J. C. Billue. Burial was in the Cemetery. 4-H CAMP, AUGUST 6-10 ... . The 4-H Club Camp will held August 6 through the at Rock Eagle. All members eligible to attend.
