First State Fire

. ........... . . v
Maneuver Held
Rain ar*l near-freezing
could not keep “Operation
Out", the Georgia’s Forestry Com¬
mission’s first state-wide fire con
trol maneuver, from being a
cess this week, H. E. Ruark, Com¬
mission Fire Control Chief
maneuver director, announced.
Almost 100 District Forester
their aides, County Rangers and
Commission headquarters person¬
nel participated in the three-day
exercise held in Jones County
^bout 13 miles from the Commis¬
sion home office in Macon.
Men and heavy equipment came
from all over the state to partici
pate in the simulated 2,000 acre
fire which was “fought’’ all day
Thursday. Camp was set up
Wednesday afternoon and was dis
mantled Friday morning. A sharp
downpour Wednesday night and
temperature in the high 30’?
Thursday night did not damper
the men’s enthusiasm, which \va
praised by Ruark, who called tM
operation a success.
Dan Hall, head of the Dade
County Forestry Unit, said the
maneuver was held under realisti
onditions—only the fire was lack
ing. Various problems in supply
maintenance, fire control, first aid
and communication were given to
the fire crews in the field, who
were judged on their performance
by the umpires.
