Dade County’s Only Newspaper. VOLUME LVII Aubrey L Dyer Elected Jaycee President Second During the second meeting of the new Dade County Junior Chamber of Commerce Friday night, Aubrey L. Dyer was elected to serve as president. Bill Tatum was chosen as first vice president and Jack Cash as second vice-president. Bob Chitwmod was selected as secretary, with Walter Page to serve as treasurer of the organ¬ ization. Directors are Harold Gross, T. J. Bell and Willis Christopher. The group decided to hold regular meetings on the first Dade Wildcats Begin Spring Practice Spring football practice got under way at Dade High Mon¬ day as 50 eager gridsters begin laying the groundwork for what is hoped will be the Wildcats’ second straight regional cham¬ pionship. The training session will last a month and will be climaxed by an intra-squad game March 28. Coach Freeman will concen¬ trate on fundamentals and pol¬ ishing-up work during the four- week period. Main problem facing Mr. Freeman will be filling gaps in the line created by the depar¬ ture of end Eddy Watkins and guard Joe McBryar, loss due to graduation, and All-State -guard johnny Lynch, ineligible be¬ cause of age. Returning from the 1956 cham¬ pionship team are All-State honorable mention backs David Steele and Terrell Wallen along with quarterback Frankie Wood- fin, halfback Wendell McCor¬ mick and line mainstays Billy Hartman, Hershel Dugan, Tom¬ my Wheeler and Jerry Price. Calloway, Charles Buchanan, Carol Gray Win Talent Contest Jack Calloway, Charles Bu¬ chanan and Carol Gray were awarded cash prizes of $15, $10 and $5 in the PTA-sponsored talent show held Friday night at Dade High School. A total of thirty entrants'presented one of the most entertaining shows seen here in some time. Calloway, who won first place for his declamation, held the audience spell-bound for seven minutes as he told a story of a World War I background. Bu¬ chanan, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Buchanan, won second place honors with a vocal solo, accompanied by Keith Delk. Carol Gray captured the hearts of all present with a sparkling tap dance to the tune of “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.” A very talented performer and a stu¬ dent of Helen Wilson in Chat¬ tanooga, Carol placed third. Winners in three age groups were first selected by the judges, who were Miss Bess Cureton, Miss Lelia Kimbrough and Mrs. E. A. Ellis. The judges then voted on first, second and third place winners from these three. Cleron Kyzer was an able sponsible for the event were Mrs M. R. Wilson, president of the PTA; Mrs. Jules Case, Mrs. H. L. Griffith, Mrs. H. E. Gross and Keith Delk. We were even more startled to see a bright, blue car moving slowly along the sidewalk. It seems a woman tourist from North Carolina had parked in front of the bank, been blocked from behind by another car, an everyday oc- curance on this side of the square, and did not choose to wait. She drove the short dis¬ tance down the sidewalk to the corner of the Dade Coun¬ ty Times office with horn a-blowing and much laughter from the sidelines. BASEBALL MEETING AT R. Club Women Plan Food Booth For Court Week Member of Dade County s demonstration clubs will operate a food booth on the square the first two days of court week, with proceeds to go into the council treasury. Chicken stew, hot dogs, cakes, pies and coffee will be served Monday, March 13, and Tuesday, March 19 from the cannery. Food will be donated by various club members. Mrs. Jiles Gass is in charge of the booth and is being assisted by Mesdames D. J. Hancock, W. T. Lea, John Tatum, Jack Cash, Lige Elliott, Patton, G. C. Harde¬ man, Louis Whited, Grady Mc¬ Kaig and John Jones. Those who have not been asked to donate food for the booth may send cakes or pies if they wish. These baked goods will be sold in a special sale Tuesday afternoon. The food booth will be located in the cannery and all are in¬ vited to come and enjoy the home cooked food.
