Roy Buckles is one of several “hot-rodders” who indulge in the “fast take-off and gravel-spinning” type of driving which frequently exceeds the speed limit and is also known as “dragging” or “nuisance driving” when it is being kept at a slower tempo. Either type is dangerous as well as annoy¬ ing to persons living in the vicinity who have to listen to the roar of engines and the spurt of gravel at all hours of the day and night. It is a mystery to older and more stable citizens just how such drivers can afford to maintain their cars and tires following such abuse. Too many of the offenders are boys who have become bored with the rigors of education and discipline and for some reason believe the present knowledge contained within immature skulls ts all they will ever need. Subsequently, any attempt to convince them otherwise is resented. The result is an onslaught of “nuisance crimes”, not quite serious enough to demand court action, but of such a nature that all of us must keep an unceasing vigil lest some major crime occur. Young manhood is not alone in this current craze . . . girls also tend to fall within the pattern and flout authority and discipline as they would last year’s dress, or else why would they be out of school participating in “kick” driving? Some parents seem to have washed their hands of their frivolous offspring and entrusted them to the winds, for they certainly behave as if the devil himself were after them . . . and he might be at that. Even though this sort of rampaging may be just inside the confines of the law, our lives are being endangered all the while. Do you and you and you not care enough about life—the greatest gift of all—to try to help put a stop to this irrespon¬ sible driving and speeding?
