Plum Nelly Show
Draws Over 7,500
Judging from the number of
tickets handed out tat the ent¬
rance, approximately 7,500 per¬
sons drove out the winding dirt
roads to Miss Fannie Mennen’s
mountain studio, Plum Nelly,
this past weekend to view the
collection of paintings and other
'attractions. Although Saturday
was cold and dreary, Sunday
turned out to be a perfect day
in which to go riding in the
country. There was still the an¬
noyance of some dust, but
rot quite like in past years, for
appeared that part of the
had been watered down.
The several parking lots were
at tall times, with the cars
handled expertly, and one
to wait in line to enter the
to see the paintings
to be served coffee, barbe¬
hot dogs and other delica¬
Unfortunately for many
arrived Sunday afternoon,
barbecue had been sold out,
those who so desired had the
of eating at long picnic
with a marvelous view of
Crook, the far moun¬
range, and the glory of
coloring in the valley.

were Charles Haygood,
Gray, Patsy McKaig, Ric¬
McKaig, Therol Fulghum,
McKaig, Glenda Moore,
Ann Moore, Lagatha Gray,
Fulghum, Carolyn Ful¬
and Norma Jean Gray,
all led by their Sunday School
teacher, Mrs. W. H. Denham.
Not far away, the gaily paint¬
ed “cider wagon” drew scores of
thirsty visitors as Mr. and Mrs.
Art Moore dispensed cider, gin¬
gerbread, hot Russian tea and
homemade grapejuice with the
assist of Mrs. Kelly Adkins. They
and other ladies of the commun¬
ity planned far in advance of
the show baking “acres” of gin
gerbread, and packing away ser¬
ving portions in their freezers.
The “city folks” were drawn to
the “Plum Nelly Jelly” booth,
which was full of all kinds of
preserved delights made in the
pleasant atmosphere of moun¬
tain kitchens. Mrs. Grady Mc¬
Kaig and Mrs. Melvin Ross were
in charge.
Some of the North Dade lad¬
who displayed quilts and
handmade lovelies were
Mesdames E. S. Oliver, C. G.
Hamlin, Charles Hixon and N.
E. Fugatt and Miss Wanda Wad¬
Jewell Gass, Dade County’s
addition to the roster of artists,
rhowed over a dozen new oil
paintings, some of them local
scenes. Many comments were
heard on both her technique and
the subjects she chose. Two
her paintings were sold before
noon on Sunday.
Dade County High
FHA Meeting
A meeting of F. H. A. members
of Dade County School was held
Oct. 16. Joyce Blackstock read
the Bible and lead the club in
the Lord’s Prayer. Sorita Wheel¬
er read a poem, “Recipes”
written by Gwendolyn Whited,
one of our new members. The
minutes were read and the roll
was called.
A committee was selected to
pick a play for the club to pre¬
sent. Members of the committee
are: Glenda Harrison, Gladys
Mahan, Ann Page and Fances
Gass. The club voted to have
anyone in the play who wanted
to be in it.
The F. H. A. Creed was repeat¬
ed in unison and the meeting
adjourned after refreshments
of cookies and hot chocolate
were served by the Refreshment
Committee.
The old-f asliioned picture
frame Helen Polly Hall selected
for her dark scene, “Nirvana”,
also attracted much comment.
This was her only contribution
to the show.
Many sales were reported by
the exhibiting artists. Many
purchasers carried home their
prizes as soon as they were
bought. The absence of the usual
copper enameled jewelry by Vir¬
ginia Dudley caused disappoint¬
ment to quite a few, but the
jewelry displayed by other art¬
ists was lovely.
One of the main features of
the two-day event was the
Chickaroonie Puppet Show, pre¬
sented hourly by Fred Arnold
and Bill Carson, much to the
delight of the younger set.
Proceeds of the New Salem
sales will total well over $1,000
rfcer all expenses, according to
Mrs. Moore. This includes the
food booth sales.
