THE DADE COUNTY TIMES: TRENTON, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1957 To The Citizens of Dade County: Since I am the Athletic Direc¬ tor and head coach of Dade High School, I am responsible for the situtation that has caused our team to be penalized by the Georgia High School Athletic Association. I scheduled games with Dun¬ lap, Ooitewah, and Sylvania to be played as “B” games by us and anyway they wanted them to be marked. Due to my weak¬ ness I allowed some “A” team players to participate in these games and therefore we broke f eme of the rules of the Associa¬ tion. Boys love to play ball, but it is up to us to keep them obeying the rules as well as doing so ourselves. I do not blame any of the member schools for protesting our action, as that is the only way we can keep the schools honest and the game worth while for our youngesters. I think Menlo and the other schools should be con¬ gratulated for their stand. It is far different from the school it use to be. I hope they continue in this new direction. Mean¬ while, as we mend our fences and continue our athletic re¬ lations with these member schools, please place the blame where it belongs and not on the school that capitalized my mis¬ takes. Ignorance is no excuse. It is my duty to be sure of the re¬ gulations and conduct of our athletic program. This Incident has hurt our school and our athletic program but we can restore it to its right¬ ful place by being sure our act¬ ions and good conduct and fine sportsmanship demonstrated by our fans and players. Violence and taunts toward these schools visiting us for con¬ tests will lead to more harsh penalities and our final expul¬ sion from the Association. Our attitudes and remarks must improve toward our offi¬ cials working our games or our school will be penalized again and the name and standing of onr school and community cer¬ tainly be worsened. Eugene Cook has ruled that the close of business on Saturday, Dec. 7 will be the deadline for Seventh Congress¬ ional District candidates to qualify for the special election of Jan. 8. In an official ruling for Sec¬ retary of State Ben W. Fortson. Jr. the Attorney General ruled that candidates for <the post,' left vacant by the accidental death of Rep. Henderson Lan-| ham, of Rome, mu3t qualify at* the State Capitol w r ith Fortson' on Dec. 7. Since that day falls on Saturday, the close of busin¬ ess would be 12 noon. There had been some question as to whether the candidates would have to qualify 45 days or 30 days before the Jan. 8 special election. One statute re¬ quires a candidate to qualify at least 45 days prior to a General, Election. But Mr. said the j Cook Jan. 8 election is not a genera] election but is a special election. He said it therefore “appears that the candidates for the election to ify be held with Jan. 4'he 8, 1958, must State qual-j Secretary of at least 30 days prior to such: date.’’ arrived deadline j He at the by ; using the 30-day rule which is authorized under another sec¬ tion of the Code.
