PAGE 4 Men in the Service QUONSET POINT, R I. (FHTNC)—James C. Carter, avi¬ ation structural mechanic first class, USN, son of James J. Carter of Trenton, Qa., and hus¬ band of Anna L. Carter of 1311 Placid pi., Jacksonville, Fla., was presented with a Navy Commen¬ dation Medal at the Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, R. I. April 17 for outstanding perfor¬ mance of duty in Antarctica with Operation Deepfreeze. The citation accompanying his award was signed by Navy Sec¬ retary Thomas S. Gates, Jr., act¬ ing for President Eisenhower. The presentation was made by Rear Admiral George Dufek, USN, U. S. Carter has been with the Squadron since that time and this was his second Commend¬ ation Medal for meritorious ser¬ vice on the white continent. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FHTNC) —Carl M. Durham, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Durham of Wild¬ wood, Ga., and John H. Ginn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ordell Ginn of Route 1, Wildwood, Ga., gradu¬ ated from recruit training May 9 at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif. The graduation exercises, marking the end of nine weeks of “boot camp”, included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries. In nine weeks of instruction, the “raw recruit” is developed into a Navy Bluejacket, ready for duty with the fleet. Home Demonstration Column National Home Demonstration Club Week May 4-10 was cele¬ brated in a number of ways by ithe different Home Demonstra¬ tion clubs of Dade County. The Trenton Club began the cele¬ bration on Sunday by holding a Garden Party at the home of Dr. and Mrs. N. H. Hutchison where punch and cake were ser¬ ved on the patio after which visitors toured the beautiful grounds surrounding the Hutchi son home. Trenton club also placed a craft exhibit in the window of the Evelene Shoppe. The New Salem Club present¬ ed corsages to the mothers pre¬ sent at their church service that day. They placed a craft exhibit in the window of Haygood Gro¬ cery. The Avans Club made cor¬ sages for the mothers at both the Methdist and Baptist churches in their Community. The Byrds Chapel club plan¬ ned a picnic for their club mem¬ bers and families and prospect¬ ive members and their families on Saturday night but because lof rain it was postponed. A craft display was placed in the base¬ ment of Morganville Church and a covered dish dinner was given on Saturday night. Club mem¬ bers, their families, prospective members and their families en¬ joyed this affair together. The men were even convinced that the ladies had turned out some very worthwhile products as evidenced by their very adequate craft exhibit. Flowers were placed in the Morganville church on. Sunday morning. The Wildwood Club planted a magnolia tree on the grounds of the Methdist church. The New Home and Slygo clubs placed flowers in the churches in their communities on Sunday.
